I know a lot of people hate on Ruiz, but he did what he could with what he had. He is not totally without skill and had surprising power in some of his shots.

Again I understand the hate. But, as far as active fighters go, ruiz has one of the best resumes. The fight above where he destroyed the guy is for the NABF title. Sure, its not a mainstream title, but its more than I ever did in my boxing career.

Anyone who can go three figths with Holy and go 1-1-1 isnt a guy I will disrespect.

I always admired Ruiz for one reason: he was seemingly willing to fight anybody. He fought Golota, Johnson, Jones, Toney, Valuev, Chagaev, Holyfield three times, Tua, and a whole laundry list of others. And...he didnt do that bad against them, considering his lack of elite skill. But nobody better not say this man wasnt any good, because truth of the matter is, nobody gets close to the title, gets a title, especially twice, unless they are good. I think had he had a more engaging style to where the fans got behind him more, he could have fought bigger names, more attractive names. As far as his ranking currently, you can argue that he has just as strong a case as any, to be in the top ten at least in the WBA. A man with his list of opposition, and how well he faired against them, for such a long period of time, makes him a worthy contender.

Would I watch if he head lined another ppv again, though? No. But I admire his guts!

I for my part dont think that Ruiz beat Valuev, neither in their first encounter nor in their second one.
To be fair their first encounter was very close and could really have gone either way.Their second encounter wasnt that close anymore.

I didnt known that Ruiz had any fans on this forum:D

I guess there must be one or two fans of Henry Akinwande on this forum, too.:D

I give Ruiz credit for the fact he made as much as he could without a lot of skill. He is a cry baby though and he mismanaged his career by doing stupid ****.

Ruiz is a tough SOB. If he really sucked that bad he'd have 15 losses. Hell half of his losses were close calls/BS calls anyway.

Well yes he has had the benefit of close fights going his way. But I also remember him getting ****ed by the judges in the first Holyfield fight. This was made up for in the second fight, but he did get ****ed in the first one.

I love how people just look at Ruiz's record, and think "oh he fought all these guys, therefore he must be decent," without considering what happened in those fights. Against Jimmy Thunder, Evander Holyfield and Kirk Johnson, Ruiz blatantly overacted to force decisive "low blow" calls. In the Holyfield fight, his acting skills enabled him to avoid getting counted out. This is about as disgraceful a way to "win" a fight as I can think of.

Then you have the constant excessive holding in most of the rest of his fights against world class competition. This is ILLEGAL under the rules of boxing, and only Ruiz's connections with King could have allowed him to get away with violating the rules with impunity for so long.

And then there's the gift decisions, the worst being against Andrew Golota, where Golota landed more punches, knocked him down twice, AND got another point deduction, and yet Ruiz still won the decision!!

That's what connections with do for you. And without his connections to King, Ruiz would have been lucky to win a regional belt, let alone a "world title" belt.

I've always liked Ruiz. Although he's had a few stinkers in the ring, a lot of times it is his opponents who are all too eager to hold.

    Like him or not:

-He had a great resume of wins and close losses at the highest level, against great competition.
-You never had to question whether Ruiz would be fighting a top fighter in his next fight. He never made money an issue.
-He is one of the few HW's who could go 12 hard rounds.
-He wasn't nearly as boring as people made him out to be, although a few of his fights did actually suck.
-He hasn't been a clincher for quite a number of fights.

    John Ruiz is the man!

You are full of **** when it comes to this fight. Kirk Johnson hit him low...VERY, VERY low, several times in that fight. The crowd was cringing in pain. You also leave out the part where Ruiz headbutted Johnson as retaliation...is that "overacting"? He also had Johnson almost out of there before Johnson cheated and was DQ'd for the last low blow.

As for the Golota fight...Golota lost the last 9 rounds, most of them pretty clearly.

    Ruiz is alright.

The problem is he's always had the shine taken from him by Stoney.

"WHAT A PIECE OF **** YOU TURNED OUT TO BE!"
