Depends. Seldon had a very very VERY good jab. Ruiz can nullify that by... well... doing what he does and clinching throughout the fight. That's made easier by Seldon not exactly being a world class mover. Seldon also had power, and coupled with his jab he stopped a lot of fighters by tearing their faces a apart. Who knows.
Seldon had severe stamina and chin issues. If he wasn't tiring out late in a fight, he was getting knocked out early. He basically was vulnerable on both ends. Ruiz's stamina and survival tactics would carry him into the late rounds, where I think he'd stop Seldon.
Who stopped Seldon early? Fields, when Seldon was 260 something pounds? Stamina, yes. Definitely. He'd gas Bruno style to the point where he couldn't even stand up.
Here are some examples. STAMINA: Oliver McCall TKO'd Seldon in 1991, by flooring him three times ( saw that fight ) TENDENCY TO GET KNOCKED OUT EARLY: Riddick Bowe smoked Seldon in only a single round a few months after the McCall fight. ( saw that fight ) NOTEWORTHY MENTIONS: Both an aging Tony Tubbs and an aging Ribalta floored him early in their matches with him ( saw those fights ) NOTES: Seldon was in great chizzeled shape for everyone of the above mentioned bouts. QUESTIONS????
Bowe specialized in getting guys out quick, though. Bert Cooper, an older Dokes, Jesse Ferguson... None of them were bad fighters and none of them went past two with Bowe.
Understood, but Seldon was a top prospect in his prime, and Bowe absolutely smoked him. A light hitting Tubbs was way past it, and dropped in the first round, before winning a decision. Jose Ribalta, another guy who wasn't particularly powerful and past it, floored Seldon early. Point being, the man got knocked on his ass a lot, and only got up some of the time. Trust me, I watched most of his early fights from about the time he was around 9-0. He was not in any way shape or form durable. Just body beautiful.
Seldon was actually a very good boxer. He just had way too much muscle and would get tired late in fights. His chin was below average, too, and he wasn't a defensive master. He had very quick hands for his size. This would be a tough fight to call, but Ruiz is tough and would eventually the rough style that he uses would get to Seldon.
McCall ruined what Seldon had going for him, not Bowe. He fought a hard, long fight with McCall and ended up gassing and being stopped in front of a hometown crowd. Don't think he ever recovered from it.
why do you say that? he recovered enough to capitalize when his promoter angled him into a title match. that says something to me, no matter how much some of these guys don't deserve title fights, when they win, they took advantage, end of discussion. now should they have even gotten a chance? the floors' open.
Seldon would take away Ruiz 1 weapon which is his jab by outjabbing him. Ruiz can't jab and grab without the jab. Seldon UD - wide
If the fight is contested within the rules, Ruiz loses by wide UD. In virtually any fight Ruiz had above the tomato-can level he either lost or cheated - blatantly violating rules against excessive holding, or faking "low blows" to avoid being counted out against Thunder and Holyfield (II) and to get an unjustified DQ "win" against Johnson. If the rules are enforced against Ruiz, and he's forced to fight WITHIN the standards of legitimate boxing, he loses every time. As he would against Seldon.
Btw the Bowe fight is hilarious with how Seldon shrugged off the first knockdown and got his lights put out seconds later.
