Hey Seamus! No need to lose sleep over my 'journeyman' comments. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you said Roy would beat EVERY HW in history until Liston, except for only winning one of three against Louis. Therein lies the 'credibility' loss IMHO. Keep punching :bbb
Laugh all you want I believe I'm right. Now if only if we had a time machine all you nostalgic bums would be running for cover. Floyd Paterson was an average champ, Jones is a better by a country mile, he simply was on a differant level. Jones couldnt live with the big HW's but he spanks all the small guys. I think Floyd and Ruiz are on the same level, Jones toys with either.
Jon, the more you speak the more your credibility goes out the window. Again, we have the continuing difficulty in matching fighters from different eras. And for all the "nostalgic bums" out there, there are an equally number of "young virgin bums" out there who think Tyson, the Klit brothers, Lewis, etc...would wipe the floor with any HW champ prior to 1980. atsch
At what point in history was ruiz regarded as the best heavyweight in the world??? Ruiz was a cagey spoiler who benefited from the multiple titles era. Just another good contender who did not sell tickets. When he had a belt nobody cared because he was never the top guy, never beat the top guy in his own era either. Beat a shopworn Holyfeild after Lewis did. So what!
In only 37 more posts you will lose the newbie tag (not that we needed to be told, mind you)....But posts like these will never bring credibility, even if you manage to post frequently enough to lose the newbie moniker!
I can see where you are coming from. Prime Jones was wicked fast and was a clowner to the extreme, somewhat like Ali for his time. Patterson wasn't a small cruiserweight either. You should give the man his due for his time and say he was a small heavyweight in the likes Marciano, Dempsey, Frazier and to some degree Tyson. Guys who fought out of a crouch. Patterson had the fastest hands of the bunch and a deadly hook with a solid right hand to follow it. The only Jones I've give a legit shot at stopping Patterson is green middleweight version of him who won the olympic gold medal. Even still that version of Floyd would give Jones a tough battle.
Ruiz gives Patterson a nice amount of trouble, but NO DOUBT Floyd beats Johnny. Floyd wins a comfortable decision.
Ali once said Patterson was the most skilled as a boxer he's ever faced and Archie Moore said Patterson had very fast hands. It may not have any weight to your opinion of him but Chuvalo told me personally that Patterson had quick hands and threw pretty serious combinations when they fought. Floyd's combination of hand and footspeed with reflexes has always been in the top 3 heavyweight of all time by many trainers universally. He's certainly considered the fastest moving in and out and with alternating hook combinations.
Quick hands - yes. But not as quick as some people here praise him to be, especially concerning combinations, there was a number of heavyweights who threw quicker combinations than Patterson. Ali can say whatever he wants, Patterson's defense wasn't top notch, his moves are rather predictable. His footwork wasn't very intelligent either. That's why such a mediocre boxer like Johansson had no trouble landing on him.
The most respected trainers in the business aside from his own trainer D'Amato have ranked Patterson near the top among the fastest heavyweights of all time. Ray Arcel, Bimstein, Charley Goldman, Silvani, Freddie Brown, Clancy, Dundee, Futch and others have all praised Floyd in his career. Johansson was no slouch. He was at one time the only man to stop Eddie Machen who gave Liston a good battle. Yeah, I wouldn't rank Ingemar among the greatest of the greats but he was still the heavyweight champion. I think you're cutting Patterson a little short. What heavyweight is faster hand and foot than Patterson, champion or contender without mentioning Ali, Tyson, or Jack Johnson?
