John Ryder vs Saul Alvarez?

It is alarming how hard Smith is to sell to the public, nobody seems interested in him, he won the Ali Trophy, won the WBA belt but still nobody cares. A guy his size should have been making the most of his time at 168 whilst he still could make the weight comfortably enough and increasing his popularity whilst he was at it. A massive disappointment for British boxing as with 2 of the belts from that division here this could have been a golden era for that division as far as British boxing is concerned when you think of the other beatable champions at that weight.

 

He hasn't helped himself though. I couldn't care less about his personality but he's fought twice since winning the Trophy and picking up the WBA strap.

The BJS fight is an easy fight to make for example. Problem is we have two fighters who both have world titles, both are waiting around to fight Canelo and both have inhabitions to fight anyone else.

As a result, they are both holding the belts to ransom.

As said before, Smith is the worse offender because apart from the Canelo fight, which he obviously wants purely from a monetary perspective, he is interested in little else. Him and JG seem to be afraid of losing the Canelo opportunity (money), if they go fight anyone else and come unstuck.

Living off the WBSS final victory and not prepared to face any live competition. Were meant to have the No 1 SMW in the world and his last 4 victories (if you include the Ryder fight) are Nieky Holzken, George Groves, Hassan N'Dam and John Ryder.

So here we are almost 2 years later in what is a pretty weak SMW division (look at the number of career MWs who have moved up!) and his best win is still Groves for christ sake!

Smith's power will always give him a chance against any fighter but even that will wane the longer he keeps making SMW.

 

In this current climate, no live gate, if Smith doesn't take that money then it's a blatant duck and highly embarrassing.

If DAZN want it, Canelo wants it, Hearn wants it... Smith has zero excuses.

I personally think Smith will get the fight by the way.

I've said before I think Canelo is extremely overated although he is a very good fighter.

Smith does have a chance in this fight, depends for me how weight drained he would be.

Its another 2 years since WBSS of making weight, probably hasn't been in peak shape since, he's had the kid and Coronavirus has happened also, so it wouldn't surprise me if making the weight is a lot harder now. There would also undoubtedly be a hydration clause in the contract.
