At least there is footage of this guy being knocked out. Where is the footage of Sullivan? The only information about him is from hearsay and books written doing that time. When you finally start seeing footage of fighters from the early 1900's you see how primitive they are. A bunch of guys fighting in 4 ounce gloves with their hands down fainting punches. That was considered skilled for that primitive era. Based off that logic Jimmy Smith would of been champion back in the day.
No way could a 180Ib fighter compete with modern heavyweights like Tomasz Adamek, Chris Byrd or James Toney.
These are my thoughts on the matter. Yes I believe that it was a weak crop of contenders, but even on that basis they should have been able to manage some sort of resistance.
My new all-time dream match is Jimmy Smith vs Bill Squires… duking it out for the "most ridiculous looking boxer ever" title!
He's right though, I talk about boxing and read about boxing, but never watch it, because I like seeing men without shirts. Hence the avatar.
Why do you need a link? Why not do some research yourself. Better still, try auto erotic asphyxiation when no one else is home.
What do you propose be done then? Should we make no effort to understand fighters that there is no film of, or should we do the best we can with the evidence that is available?
Having a beer a *** and then a fight was how it was done!!! Todays "superstars" would never dream of having a fight like that... All them fighting men drinking beer and burping would scare them half to death!!!
You could grow a fully functioning brain. But I read your other post so that doesn't seem likely. First off clueless casual fan who I am about to ignore. We don't need footage of Sullivan. Because we have footage of guys like Jackson Johnson who fought after him. Jackson Johnson was crude and primitive by modern boxing standards. So logic would dictate boxers before Johnson were even more primitive. You get it? Of course you don't. This is way too much for you to process. You can not compare fighters who fought in that era to the modern era because of the skills set alone. Then when you add weight to the picture it becomes worse. There are no 5'9 170 to 180 pound guys winning the heavyweight title now days. Even with their superior skill set. So no 10th tier, primitive skilled 180 pound guy from over 100 years ago could. Bye bye now. Now you can go back to thinking because a fighter fought back in 1950's plus they would beat a modern sized and skilled fighter.
