John Tate was more skilled, but he lacks the stamina to keep Quarry out of him, i see Quarry by late stoppage.

Quarry loved fighting Big Guys, he handed Ron Lyle & Mac Foster their first pro defeats. George Foreman ducked Quarry. Big John Tate is an underrated fighter. This is a very good match-up.

Jerry Quarry was a counter-puncher with a great jaw. And that mixture is the bane to every big slugger (think Sanchez-Lopez, Lujan-Zamora, Starling-Honeyghan, etc.). Quarry thrived on those clubbing punchers like Lyle, Foster and Shavers and the Foreman matchup was so intriguing it was a shame it never happened. However, John Tate was first and foremost a boxer. One who could put his punches together in good sharp combos. I love Jerry, but I would lean towards Tate on a 15 round decision. Now, having said that, I cannot deny that Quarry handled the fast boxing, sharp-hitting and quite mobile for his size Buster Mathis quite easily. So......this is also intriguing.

Big John Tate was a skillful fighter, but had a very serious durability problem. It may be that Tate gives Jerry Quarry some problems, but Quarry probably would knock him eventually.

Interesting match up and one that I've never thought of. Jerry Quarry has a track record of doing well against some of the bigger-slower moving heavys. Tate was certainly a large man, but he was also more of a boxer rather than plodding puncher, and one with a pretty good reach and mobility. Of course I can't place Big John in the same category as an Ali or Ellis in the boxing department, but if he doesn't get Careless as he did against Weaver, he might manage a decision. I say this with no real conviction though.

1969-'70 Quarry takes Big John apart like he did Mathis....maybe even tko's him in a late round.

Very Interesting matchup. Big John Tate is under appreciated. When I look at Tate's career the word "if" comes to mind. What if Weaver had not landed the hook from hell? Tate would have won the decision and went on to bigger and better things. What if Ace Miller had put Tate back in the ring only 3 months after the grueling fight with Weaver? What if Tate had fought a soft touch instead of Berbick?

Back to the topic, Quarry vs Tate. To me this is really a tossup. But if I had to make a pick I would go with Quarry n a tough fight. Quarry did well against big men. Jerry's counter punches his way to a decision.

Tate would win this fight, if he could stay on point. But if Jerry catches him, it's over.

Tate was on roll prior to the Weaver fight in which he was ahead and stopped in the 15th rd & that fight ruined Big John. Tate could out-hustle many, In fact I gave him a good shot against Holmes but after the Weaver fight he was never the same fighter. Weaver KO was devastating and damaging. Quarry had the type of solid chin and power that beat the big punchers like Shavers,Lyle and Mac Foster among others. I saw all 3 of those fights. He could be out-hustled by Tate for a while but I see Quarry's power taking its toll depending on the length of the battle 10-12-15 and which Tate - Quarry we are speaking of

Tate. late stoppage due to cuts/swelling.
I'd go with that jab and lefthook off the jab/straight right to bust up Jerry. The other thing I like w/ Tate in this matchup is he punched and moved. He didn't stand around waiting for a receipt---which is exactly what Quarry is looking to do with that sneaky left hook of his. And Tate kept those hands up high so Jerry is going to have to create his openings. Good fight, but I think Tate wins the rounds and that skin just won't hold up to the amount of punches Jerry gets hit with.
