John Wayne Parr comeback is official

8 time World Champion and regarded by many as one of the 15 best foreign (non Thai descent) Muay Thai fighters of all time, John Wayne Parr, is making a comeback.

Joe NADER, the promoter of Powerplay Promotions, posted the following message on facebook:

"It gives me great pleasure to announce that the legendary John Wayne Parr has come out of retirement and has signed a 3 fight deal with Powerplay Promotions".

not really that stoked about this. i think he retired at EXACTLY the right time. hes better off focusing on his family and caged muay thai venture imo. ill still be cheering for him of course.

Don't know the guy at all, but I am always a fan of greats in combat sports retiring forever immediately following a solid/great win. :conf

Though even when I was there, I never remember seeing Muay Thai on the TV. I remember watching Stan the Man in K1, but that's the only non-boxing combat sport guy I can remember. :conf atsch

JWP is the epitome of the "Real Deal" when it comes to non Thai MT fighters, not just for his very pure Thai Style but also his very "Thai" attitude to the sport and fighting in general. :deal Many Non Thai fighters go thier whole careers missing the depth of the sport culturewise and JWPs attitude to Thailand and the Thais is spot on and for me that makes him a top 5 non Thai ATG.

He learnt his trade in Thailand in the Golden Age of Muay Thai the 90s and it shows. Back then training in Thailand for non Thais was a whole differant ball game than it is today. Today it's a very easy process on teh islands and in BKK with many doing it, so much so an industry has been built up around it and you don't even have to be particularly good with some of the "money gyms" even taking novices. Back then many gyms wouldn't take you, it was sink or swim (for many drown), there was no infrastructure for non Thais to fight really, and the idea of even getting near a fight at Lumpinee or Raja was almost blasphemous. It was some lonely ruff house stuff!

I know kinda what you guys are saying about his age etc, but the gunslinger's got more than enough in his holster to still put some of the biggest international names in the game into some of deepest & darkest shoot outs around, the guys a ****in legend! Anyway, he's the same age as me and I still feel like I could give some hungry young pups a thing or to to remember me by, so I say if JWP feels he can still pour on the the hellfire let it rain!!!! I wouldn't bet against him that's for sure!:yep

I could not view the highlight for whatever reason. It was probably due to the recent forum transitioning.

Anyway, I have a question about John Wayne Parr. I have been watching more Thai fights over the past year, but I am by no means an authority on technique. What is it about Parr that makes him look top heavy to me? It seems to me that he is more comfortable punching, has adjusted his stance for this reason; and is not an overly impressive kicker?

Can someone far more familiar with proper Muay Thai techniques tell me what I am seeing, or how I am wrong?

 

Yep - we have been discussing and some exciting names (you got one) have been proposed, just have to get them on da plane!

 

JWP is not an overly active kicker per se but he does let loose on occasion. His experience in boxing shows in his Thai style. One of JWP's fortes is staying in the pocket and just slipping those kicks to get his knees and punches in.
