John Wesley Meekins

I love threads like this. Better than troll garbage that continually pops up.

I’m not familiar with Meekins and this thread has given me the impetus to do some investigating of his career. Cheers guys!

 

Haven't seen this one before. Good fight. A little bit of a quick stoppage by Steve Smoger's standards...

 

I actually have many of his fights and he was hyped huge by a certain match maker who thought he was a sure thing. I wanna say Teddy Brenner but I could be wrong.
He came out of New York I believe and most of his bouts were televised by ESPN.
He had pretty good power but at times he could be very stiff and seemed to lose concentration at times and honestly I thought he was a very good boxer but not a future champion.
First Brazier bout was stopped due to a clash of heads. Second fight Brazier got rocked early and then dominated the entire bout and it was a superb display of inside combination punching and defense by Brazier.
After Brazier 2 Meekins reeled off some wins and met Meldrick Taylor in a title fight and he was outclassed.
Meekins last notable win was vs Santos Cardona and then he met Terrance Ali who was simply too busy for Meekins.
He attempted a comeback and then met Darrin Morris- one of my favorite boxers- and Morris put a pretty bad beating on him.
I miss the old ESPN fights were you could literally watch a fighter progress from very early in thier careers to HBO,Showtime and then pay per view.
I used to watch Tony Martin, Anthony Stephens, Calvin Grove, Kevin Pompey, James Hughes and it was so fun.
I even remember when BUDDY Mgirt fought on ESPN the first time.

 

My all-time favorite fighter from early ESPN was Tim Burgess who was out of New York and was matched up hard - he almost beat a prime Frankie Randall at lightweight.

 

His obsession with Artur Grigorian was both insane and legendary. Thought he was the greatest LW ever

 

I just put his name in the forum search engine and quite a bit came up because - like I said - if one hit replyto one of his posts, then his post would be intact regardless if his posts were deleted. Anyways, I did seem to have a back and forth with him quite a bit. I seemed to have enjoyed calling out a lot of his nonsense. But aside from Grigorian, he just adored Henry Maske, Sven Ottke, Oktay Urkal and must have had a shrine to Arthur Abraham in his home. Apparently he also had an alter ego as he also seemed to post as Kosst Amojan. However, no surprise, he was also banned.

 

Burgess was a tidy boxer. Garnered a lot of praise for his skills.

Travelled to England to fight big punching Lloyd Christie (brother of Errol) who was very lucky to win close (half a point) decision.

The fight was filmed but not uploaded on Youtube.

Tim also fought in Scotland to batlle the talented but fragile Alex Dickson to grab a draw over 12 for some spurious title.

Don´t think that fight was filmed.

From what I remember reading Burgess probably deserved both decisions but his lack of power and fighting on the backfoot (counter-punching) cost him the wins unfortunately.

 

He had the craziest movement I have ever seen.He was fighting Miguel Santana who at the time was up and coming and Miguel dropped his hands in frustration at Burgess movement kind of like mocking him and Burgess ended up somehow still nailing him almost knocking his mouth piece out lol.
I wish I could find some of his fights.

 

Haha, I think you’re right — that’s the guy.

On the ‘well I’ll start my own round by round poll to show you guys’ it was like that scene in Old School where he thought everyone was going streaking with him … and it turned out, not so much.
