This content is protected For the first minute there was almost no punching at all. Just feinting. Dykes threw a few light, meaningless punches. Bratton was throwing nothing at all. Finally, he did, and it spelled the end for Dykes. Bratton lashed out with a lightning quick overhand, almost hook like right that floored Dykes. No sooner had Dykes risen than Bratton floored him again with the exact same shot, dumping Dykes on his face. Dykes rose for now the second time and was shortly thereafter dropped flat on his back by another overhand right. It just wasn't Dykes' day. Verdict: Fun and fascinating one-round KO. It was stunning when it occurred, but I didn't think that the camera angles were sufficient for the viewing of each of the punches that floored Dykes. It's up to you.
When watching the fight, they were both pretty cautious with Bratton using almost nothing but the left jab. At 4:17 the mistake which I think Dykes made was launching himself with his jab, so when Bratton countered with a cross the force was amplified as Dykes was propelling himself into the punch. Bratton's cross also seemed to me to land near the ear, which would have upset and disoriented Dykes' balance for the rest of the fight. Bratton followed up with a quick left shovel hook. I think Bratton smelled blood, as he realised that Dykes hasn't recovered from the initial knockdown. A quick right hand brought him down again, and it seemed to me that Dykes was panicking a bit as well. Who wouldn't be? Another right hand straight to the chin put Dykes down for good. I think this fight shows Johnny Bratton's finishing ability as well as his cross counter.
super impressive KO by Bratton. Dykes was only stopped twice in 151 fights, the other on a TKO by Tiger Jones, which was probably on a cut, as Jones wasn't much of a puncher, although I don't know for certain. Dykes went to a MD with Robinson, and beat Gavilan and Giardello among many others. Just shows anyone can go with the right punch. I wonder if the fact that Dykes had never been knocked down worked against him as this was a new experience.
I think Bratton really surprised him by throwing almost nothing and then lashing out with the counter right. Another thing, I thought Bratton had a weird right hand. It looked like an overhand, but it came from the side, which would be very awkward to handle.
I was just reading about Jones-Dykes. It sounds like a great fight. However, it sounds like Jones stopped him legitimately. Boxrec says that Dykes was well ahead going into the 10th, and Jones stopped him by scoring two knockdowns.
Dykes does have an impressive record. He has a lot of split decision losses, including ones to Gavilan, Joe Miceli, Walter Cartier, Ernie Durando, and Willie Troy.
Okay. Thanks for the information. That is surprising from Jones who generally went the distance all the time. Still 2 KO'd bys in 151 fights isn't bad and Dykes was durable.
Yep. Too bad that one wasn't filmed. That's true. So many decisions when it comes to Jones. Sometimes average strengthed fighters can really explode every once and a while.
Anither guy who didnt go away who Bratton took out quick. He was just in the zone in this period of time as he won the vacant title immediately after. Bratton is sweet as …Sugar?
Shows that if you stick out your jab and bring your hand back to your waist, things are not going to end well. Dykes never brought his hand back high, and lots of times he compounded the problem by leaning forward with his chin. It was just a matter of time until Bratton timed him.
