These 2 FW’s just missed each other by a year or 2. What would happen if 1967 Winstone squared off with 1970 Famechon where they both lost to Saldivar? Who takes it?
I think Winstone at his best was a little bit better and than Famechon would win a close, tactical fight. Both were beautiful boxers at their bests.
Hi Philly, Xplosive. Nice thread mate, I am a bit biased but I reckon Fammo was a bit stronger physically and all round a bit more robust than the Welsh wizard. Fammo was a pretty rough customer on the inside. Winston was also had a lot of trouble with bad cuts unlike Famechon. I know the triangle theory usually leads to erroneous conclusions and I realise Saldivar was older when he fought the Aussie than when he faced Winston but I believe Famechon handled the Mexican fighter’s strength and aggression a bit better than Winston did. Famechon on a close even split points nod over fifteen rounds. Talk about two fighters with educated left hands. Cheers Fellas.
Another common opponent is Jose Legra. I don’t have much information on the first fight but he destroyed Winstone in the re-match but I think Howard was a little over the hill by then after a long career. I think Legra did enough to beat Famechon in his next fight I felt that was a bad decision. This is a really difficult match to pick. Literally a coin flip. I’m tempted to lean towards Winstone at his peak but with no conviction. It would be a very aesthetically pleasing match.
Winstone was never the same after the third beating Saldivar gave him. That's when Legra beat him up in the rematch. And yeah, Legra was robbed blind against Famechon. I thought he beat Johnny VERY clearly.
A clash of skills at the highest level. I size with Winstone, who would win the fencing battle between lead hands, effectively setting up his work.
