Johnny Nelson vs David Haye

Completely agree, that belt was crap.

 

Nelson was awkward. Haye was awesome.

Haye.

 

Calzaghe, Naseem Hamed and Marco Antonio Barrera in the mid 90's to early 2000's were the best in their division and primarily were WBO champs. WBO was not crap, all the sanctioning body belts are ultimately worthless garbage but the WBO back then was not without merit compared to the others.

Took the words out my mouth. Once Johnny found his confidence, he was a classy fighter with power. I remember him and Brendan giving Carl Thompson a hard time at ringside, trying to get a fight on. Nobody pressses Carl Thompson for a fight unless you can back yourself up. Johnny did, and won the fight albeit on an early contested stoppage. Styles make fights and I do believe that a confident Johnny Nelson out hustles and bewilders Haye for a points win.
And I will finish with the words of the late Cordwell Hylton (The Bloxwich Bomber) who once said to me during a sparring session, a light sparring session as Cordy could bang a bit.

Who did Johnny Nelson beat in his WBO reign? As far as I can remember, a SD against Guillermo Jones and a bunch of no hopers, some of whom with dodgy padded records. The Thompson bout was an absolute joke of a stoppage, sickening stuff!

A prime Haye is leagues above anybody Nelson beat.

 

I think Haye slaughters him, I really do. Nelson tries his ugly hit and hope stuff early on twitching and all that but as soon as he feels Haye’s power he gets on his bike and is in survival mode. Nobody beat Haye by running as he’s a great finisher and very good at setting up his big right hand. Nelson runs for 5-6 rounds but once Haye catches up with him it’s over.

 

Prime Haye would win, most likely by landing a big one on the chin. Nelson was solid in the end though I give him that, strong, awkward, tricky. Had a good career. But Haye would seek and land.

 

Just remembered Nigel Benn was the WBO middle champ back in the day, demolished DeWitt and Barkley stateside and then lost it to Eubank in a classic, again the WBO was not crap.

 

Haye via TKO.

Nelson looked superb against Thompson. But Haye was just on another level.

Haye/Breidis would be an epic fight.
