Gotta admit I never saw him fight. What was his story? He's got loads of stick on here yet was unbeaten a long time and stopped both Carl Thompson and Ezra Sellers. Are there any clips of him too?
Basically, the Ingle team turned him from one of the dullest and most passive losers in British boxing to... One of the dullest and most passive winners in British boxing. He was mind-numbingly negative, but had a lot of physical talents. Nelson was also one of the most skilled British fighters of all time. He was hard to hit, tentative to attack, and just about impossible to knock out. While he was justifiably criticised for being so dull, he was an extremely talented and (by the end of his career) determined boxer.
You've pretty much covered it! I honestly beleive he could have given so much more in the ring, if he was as determined and motivated like he was the night he fought Carl Thompson
To the viewer Me), when he was fighting he appeared to be very arrogant. However, now that he is a pundit on TV he seems pretty much a decent guy. Good commentator.
I've just finished reading his book and it's very good. I'm one of the few who actually enjoyed watching his fights and I also really enjoy his work as a pundit on Sky.
Yes but he beat a fairly decent heavyweight for the title vaslev I think his name was but can't be A$$ed checking.
Lennox "The Lion" Lewis- much as I like him, he never made me think of a savage lion. Matt "The Bedford Bear" Skelton- let's face it, he's Morph and no-one else. Joe "The Italian Dragon" Calzaghe- he's neither from Italy, nor a dragon. It's a good think that Herbie Hide wasn't called "Iron Man" or Frank Bruno "The Thug", because that'd have been beyond ******ed.
Nikolai Kulpin. Green as grass at the time, but would later prove himself to be tough as nails and a hard hitter.
That was for the WBF title but he also won the WBU against Alex Vassilev who was starched by my mate Mathew Ellis but had earlier beaten Harry Senior, Israel Ajose, Mark Potter and Wayne Llewelyn. Not bad form by British standards. In one fight Johnny had against Aldison Rodriguez one of the judges scored 11 rounds EVEN!!!! lol That was when Nelson was banished to the small articles at the back of the black, white and red Boxing News. I'd love them to bring i back that way i'v still got some from 92.
