I love Johnny too and its sad not many people relize just how great he was but that time has came and went. Wasnt he stopped by a journeymen a few years ago ? Thats terrible for a legend like that.
For him to be more or less in the same boat as Luis Ramon Campas right now is sad, as he was easily two or three classes above Yory in their primes.
Yeah pulling up his record I didnt relize he was 41 which makes this even worse. He got stopped 2 and half years ago in 2 rounds vs Sandro Marcos **** even a extremly shot Kevin Kelly beat down Marcos. He did a MD over Evaristo Primero about a year go and ive never even heard of that dude.
Tapia looked shotter than shot can get against Primero. Primero took the fight on like seventy two hours notice, was outweighed by something like eleven pounds, was a **** poor fighter anyhow, and he still pushed Tapia to the very brink. Tapia has all the guts in the world but he is the definition of shot.
Again, I hope he focuses, trains his ass off, and gives one last hurrah against someone he can look like a million bucks against with ease. Unfortunately I don't think that's what this is about. Like Yory Boy and to an extent Holyfield (but for completely different reasons from both), I think he's sucked into a pattern where he needs to fight well past his best, just to TCOB. He could be on his way to becoming a gatekeeper and punching bag for young fighters in the lower weight classes, which is no way for him to be remembered. :verysad
Tapia is a prime illustration of why boxing needs a pension fund for fighters. As long as the greedy promoters and belts rule the sport, that won't happen, unfortunately. No one who was that good should have to do this to make end's meat. If you've seen his features on HBO, you realize just how sad this is. Between this and the Resto thing, it's been sort of a bummer day for a fan.
