Actually it was a combination of hypertension and cardiomegaly, not drugs. His family physician after reviewing his autopsy and with extensive knowledge of his personal medical history commented that his death was unpreventable at that stage of his life (that is, curbing his addictions wouldn't have reduced his risks). In fact, his past substance abuse was even less of a triggering factor than his chronic Hep C, likely contracted from getting so many tattoos - some probably in sketchy if not disreputable & unhygienic establishments.
