In this article Johnson says there was no prior arrangement in his defence against Stanley Ketchel, but that knowing Ketchel was not really a threat he did not try to put him away.

He says the knockdown was not genuine, and that he caught the impact on his glove but went down to add value to the movie rights.

What credence you place in this is up to you, but I thought it was interesting to read so here is the link.

sounds about right to me. from watching the film many times i definitely think it shows:
    1. he was carrying ketchel.
2.the ketchel punch that knocks johnson down barely or never even landed

I agree he was carrying Ketchel then Ketchel caught him though, which is why when he gets up he goes after him, that has always been my take on it

Frankly, I don't give a lot of credence to what Johnson says. It's clear from his autobiography and later interviews that he saw the truth as something was open to interpretation, and primarily interpretations that flattered him.

If you look at the KD punch, Johnson's left hand is completely extended as Ketchel's right lands, his glove is nowhere near where the punch lands, so no, he didn't block it or ride with it. Rather he collapsed in Ketchel's direction.

Go to 10:10. It is plain as day.

I agree he did not block it ,but no matter how many times I see that clip I still think he was allready falling before the punch landed ,IF it landed.

He falls into the direction of the punch. That would be a very dangerous thing to do against Ketchel. Sorry, it looks genuine. It's certainly understandable. Most of the fight is on film and Johnson is handling him the entire route. You could see where he would get a bit complacent.

I'm not just saying it because I rate Johnson , it just looks like Jack is allready going down.

I have no problem accepting that Ketchel might have the power to drop Johnson, he was after all a tremendous hitter.

The wway Johnson falls and gets up makes me think that Jack went down on purpose, also his is obviously carrying Ketchel up to that point. Johnson may like to toot his own horn but i think he is right on this one.

He's ducking the punch but ducks into it and shifting his weight on his back foot. His head is moving but his back leg doesn't go until the punch lands.

Look, Johnson couldn't even get the details of this correct. His glove was nowhere near the where the punch landed.

Take a break from the potent JJ Kool-Aid.

im not on any kool-aid. just going by my own observations of the footage. looks like it could have been faked or it could have been semi-legit with ketchel catching johnson who was slipping to the floor already.

its such a blatant telegraphd punch that the faking a knockdown story could well be true
obviosly Johnson saw it coming a mile off

Conn, I completely agree with you. This is one of those moments where i said, "Whooa, I don't think so!" It's actually best when it can be shown in slo-mo where you can actually see Johnson's leg bending and his weight shifting before that hail Mary ever lands, which BTW skids off the top of his head. I think Johnson simply fell over and was embarrassed enough to end matters.

I'm sensing some kind of Johnson theme going here...

I find it strange that a defensive master like Johnson,in his prime, should be caught with a crude overhand right ,and that he should choose to evade it by ducking down , stranger still , given that he was over 6' and Ketchel was 5'9". Johnson blocked, or picked punches off with his gloves, you wont find much evidence of him ducking punches ,not even from men his own height or taller.
And no ,I haven't been on the Kool Aid either.
