I'm not sure it's a particularly admirable quality in a fighter to smile while he's got his opponent in serious trouble like that.

I remember Duran sneering and smiling and gloating when he was beating up Davey Moore too.

I guess the mean steak in great fighters just comes out like that sometimes. I don't condemn it, but it's not anything I'd celebrate either.

Sorry, but it's cool when Johnson does it.

I agree with all your post here. What Johnson had to endure was nothing short of disgusting. First off, imagine being him walking to the ring in Reno, and hearing a band start playing a 'sweet' little ditty called 'All coons look alike to me'

It should be noted that Johnson used his smile (tinged with sarcasm and insincerity) to intimidate his opponents and throw them o0ff their game.

It might be necesary to look at it in that context as well.

He's away hiding in an Afghan mountain cave, terrified of McVey.

Wasn't Jeffries a victim of the system as well?

It wouldn't have been as shocking to the people of the times as it is to us now.

    [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coon_song[/ame]

The song is question was written by a black man, Ernest Hogan :

    [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Hogan[/ame]

Obviously, in 2011 the scenario would be unacceptable and a big deal for a fighter to be walking to a ring in Reno with such a song playing.
Even in Australia it might now be considered passe. :D

Sure, he had it coming just like any sportsman has it coming. Johnson had it coming against Willard .... Willard had it coming against Dempsey .... etc,

Some woman wrote a disgusting song, leading up to the fight, called Jim-a-da-Jeff,or something equally moronic. All about Jeffries whipping Jack.
