I never hear this fight discussed?

Jack Johnson's fights with Jeffries, Langford, Willard... All of them are discussed.

But his two round KO of Fitz?

Fitz was obviously years past his best but obviously the skill, knowledge and power still remained in part. And as far as I know, no one ever blasted Fitz away like that before or after.

Even well over 2 years afterwards he went 12 rounds with Bill Lang.

Not a feather in Johnson's cap, exactly?

Did anyone at the time think that Fitz could stop the black menace, as this was shortly before Johnson won the heavyweight title.

    Thoughts?

Fitz entered the fight with a bad elbow, and did nothing. Fitz was past his prime, he gave in from weak punches.

Likely the low point in Fitz's career. The win looks good for Johnson on paper, but I think he caught Fitz at his very worst.

Ah, I knew nothing about the fight so that certainly explains it.

Guys, I happen to have recorded audio/footage of Jeffries, 1927, suggesting Fitzsimmons was the toughest man he faught. One both occasions and following the fight, he awoke, well aware of the previous days physical encounter....

other audio footage of interest may be Jim Corbett having a joke, whilst being the 3rd man in complete mismatch..

Tommy Ryan..M/W champ 1898, discussing his career.. 1927.

Tommy Burns.. rating his favourite boxers... 1927.

'Kid' Mc Coy... upon release from jail... 1927 interwiew.

Dempsey/Schmeling sparing prior to Louis rematch..

All that I list are not for sale. I simply wish to offer boxing fans the chance to witness the historical events, unlike so many mongrels, profiteering from the interest of others.

And, for the record... Johnson would have been the better of Fitz... through ring craft, pace, strenght, gaming and pure ability.

Johnson gets no credit because he fought a shot shell who was completely over the hill and had no business in the ring at that point. Fitz was 44 years old. Fight was utterly meaningless. Even Johnson admitted it.

Very true Johnson ,as vain and self praising as he was said in his autobiography Fitz was well past it.

Flamengo ,do you intend to post this material on this forum? I remember what a buzz it was hearing Jack Johnson's voice for the first time on you tube, any audio you post would be devoured by the members ,I'm sure,on another note ,are you familiar with the books of Raymond Aitchison? He wrote a story about an Aboriginal family, one of whom becomes a boxer ,very good read ,the book is entitled" The Illegitimates."ps Any more on Les Darcy?

It's been a long time since I've read that autobiography, but it seemed Johnson had quite a bit of respect for Fitz, Jeffries, and Sullivan...I believe that he picked each over Dempsey...

Johnson called Dempsey "essentially a 4 round fighter, after that the storm blows out".Johnson named Fitz as the second hardest hitter he saw, behind Choynsky, and in front of Jeffries.I don't know what Johnson had to say about Sullivan ,apart from calling him Captain John during the Jeffries fight and easily getting the best of him and Corbett in the swapping of insults.Sullivan who disliked Johnson intensely ,gave him grudging respect after he stopped Jeffries stating his defence and anticipation were marvellous.

McVey, I have waited for the last 3 days to reecive, via australia post, the DVD of mine, regardind Darcy and the history of Oz boxing, primarily for the sake of dpw417. As you have shown similar interest, I will be sure to make the Darcy material viewable on youtube. The Vids containing Jefferies, Corbett, Burns, Ryan and McCoy will be transfered from Vid to DVD, prior to the P.C... As I live in a small country town surrounded by cow ****, this may take a couple of days. Other material I have includes Johnson,Janette, from the late 30`s,(playfully sparring) in technicolour, with audio. A very, very old William Muldoon, (John.L`s trainer) standing at the top of a New York Building talking with the man in control of the NY Athletic com. Hours of Louis sparing.. Harry Greb chatting, (no audio) flexing his muscles and shadow boxing. Benny Leonard joking about his loss of a few hundred thousand dollars due to the depression... Honestly, its been too long since I last veiwed the footage.. I will ensure its transfered this week mate, and make it available on youtube a.s.a.p.

    Wow,
Outside of the Dempsey Schmeling thing, and Jim Corbett. I do have the rest.
Thought the interviews came in the early 30's, or so. I was sure a Micky Mouse cartoon was the first with sound.

Speaking of Tommy Burns rateing the top heavyweights speech, there was more to it than that, He was also talking the release of his book, and I belive Sam Langford as the best color fighter he ever saw.

Speaking of his book, any word on how that went?? Trying to find a copy of that book.

Its a good win over a past prime champ, it was only after 5years after the Jeffries fight, 18months after he lost his light heavyweight crown, and 2years before he went 12 against Bill Laing. If Jeffries gets cedit then Johnson should get proportional credit, especially with the more emphatic nature of the win

Johnsons achievement of cleaning out the division of the past and future coloured champs and beating 3 linear champions shouldn't be underrated even if each may not have been 100% prime.
