Johnson vs Flynn. The complete film.

I'm glad to be back here and have no wish to, "blot my copybook",some issues are just not worth the grief they engender,so I'll leave things there,We all must make our own minds up about the content posted here and those who have posted it.

 

I heard of the exhibition where Smith apparently boxed circles around Johnson, but Smith really knocked him out? Where can I find out more?

 

Smith didnt ,"box circles around ,"Johnson he did something that a pro sparring partner would not intentionally do,he landed a haymaker on his employer and put him partially through the ropes.

He did not knock Johnson out ,and Johnson boxed a further 2 sessions with 2 different sparring partners that same afternoon . Those are the facts.

The obvious answer is Adam Pollacks two volume biography on Johnson.
GunBoat Smith in a taped interview with Pete Heller for his excellent book ,In This Corner,a collection of taped interviews with old time boxers,talks about their sparring sessions and about how he put Johnson through the ropes,He does not claim to have kod him and he didn't.
As you are no doubt aware you cannot be tko'd in a sparring session.
If you could the following would have that result on their records.
Marciano v Toxie Smith sparring ceased for the day after Smith floored Rocky in his preparation for the Cockell fight.

Vitali Klitschko v Raphael Butler, sparring stopped for the day after Butler dropped Vitali.
Vitali v Travis Walker,sparring stopped for the day after Walker floored Vitali.
At the end of the day its sparring,and ,as Marciano said," in sparring you try different things out."
Johnson's sparring was not stopped for the day ,he went on to box two other sparring partners.Here is the sparring order for the day.
Smith 4 rds,Smith caught Johnson with right hand in the last of the 4 rounds dropping him to the floor.About 500 spectators were present and cheered,Johnson was not amused.
Next up for sparring was a LA light weight named Arslinger he and Johnson went 2 rounds for speed.
Last was a middleweight named Johnny O Keefe he and Johnson went 2 rounds.

You didn’t bring it to anyone you flop we have all been able to view it since 2020 as Mcvey had said.

 

I dont know why you continually bring this up over the years and misrepresent it. Particularly after I posted day after reports of it for your benefit. You are right, you can also read Gunboat's own words on the incident in Peter Hellers book (and hear them in the audio recording of it) where he says nothing of it being either an exhibition or a TKO but merely says he put Johnson through the ropes in a training session, which of course it was because it was sparring for the Ketchel fight, not an exhibition.

 

Man, if I was rich & had actual film of Greb fighting I'd post it to the world for free.
