Johnson vs. Jeanette DQ news read in the works

Just wondering what particular insight the Boston papers would have on this as the fight was held in Philadelphia.I am English and my US geography is hazy , but a Philly paper would surely have more gravitas.

 

On reflection, perhaps it would be better if you mailed it to another poster?

JOHNSON BEATS JEANETTE
Negro Champion, However, Was Disqualified on an Alleged Foul
11/25/05-PHILADELPHIA LEDGER
After outclassing Joe Jeanette for a round and a half, Jack Johnson, The
Negro Heavyweight Champion of the World, lost the bout at the National
Athletic Club [Phila.] last night on an alleged foul.
Jeanette, after being thumped in lively fashion in the first round, assumed
a crouching pose in the secondround. He undertook to run in and clinch,
ducking a vicious right hand swing. Johnson ripped a right hand hook up for Jeanette's jaw. The latter dropped to the floor,writhing in apparent agony.
He claimed to have been struck a foul blow.
He was removed to the dressing room and the club physician substantiated
his claim. Johnson was promtly disqualified. Jeanettte professed to be in
great pain and lay in his dressing room in apparent agony. It is understood
that the police proposed to keep Johnson to keep Johnson, Jeanette and
the club officialunder surveillance.

Jack Johnson defeated Joe Jeanette in six fast rounds at the National
Athletic Club last night. Jeanette was forced to take the count once in
the fifth round and three times in the sixth round.

in the ring ;in a three-round bout
at the Sharkey A. C. Monday night
with Joe Jeanette, and the negro Johnson,
as usual, showed his skill as, a
boxer and had no trouble In outpointing
Jeanette.

The first report is from the Philadelphia Ledger ,where the fight took place, as such, it is possibly more accurate than a wire report from the Boston Herald, which we are assured is coming presently.

 

JOHNSON FOUGHT FOUL.
PHJI-ADELPHIA. Nov. 28.—Jaok
Johnron, the colored champion heavyw
i g h t , has gotten himself very 'much
disliked In this city. He brought this
bad feeling on himself through his
foul tactics while boxing Joe Jeannette,
the colored boxer of New York In their
six-round bout before the National A.
C. Saturday night. These tactics finall
y resulted In Johnson deliberately
- landing a foul blow on Jeannette In
the secortd round, which caused the
later to sink to the floor In agony.
At the time Jeannette was punishing
him severely about the body.
Jeannette was so badly Injured that
he was carried out of the ring and Into
h i s dressing-room, and Johnson was
disqualified. The police arrested Johnson
and charged him with assault and
battery.

The announcement that Jack Johnson would meet
Joe J e a n n e t t e at the National A. C , Philadelphia, on
Nov. 25, was t h e means of drawing a large crowd to
see t h e big fellows in action.
The bout lasted only two rounds, but was a hummer
from the t ap of the gong, J e a n n e t t e having the l>est of
the milling.
I n the second round Joe opened up operations with
a left to t h e face, and Johnson missed a vicious right
uppercut. Johnson then swung his left to t h e body,
but Joe came back with left to t h e face and right to t he
bodj'. Johnson put his left to the face, and J o e sent
several jabs to t h e face, which worriedJohnson and he
rushed madly at Joe and swinging a wicked left it
landed low on the New Yorker, who dropped to t he
floor, where he lay writhing in agony for some tune,
until he was carried to his dressing room

 

Thanks for posting this Matt ,we now have both sides of the coin .The question is not did Johnson foul Jeannette? But, did he do it because he was in danger of losing?

I have shied away from getting involved anymore in these debates between two knowlegable posters as having posted material that plainly proved somethings, it was ignored in order to score a point.
However one last run....

Jeannette Goes Low in Bout at

PHILADELPHIA, Nov 25—Joe Jeanliette
of New York went down in the
second round of the wind-up with.Jack
Johnson, tho negro heavyweight champion,
at the .National A. C. tonigh,'.
from a foul blow, and 10 minutes later
he was carried from the ring suffering
Intense pain.
The blow was delivered about the middle
of the second round and when both
men were fighting fast. Johnson rushed
Jeannette into a corner and one of his
many; swings, went foul, the blow landing
several inohos below the belt. Joannfittfl's
; seconds worked over' him five
minutes, and then carried him to his
dressing room.
Jeanhette, to the surprise of evnry
one, 'had all the better of the flrst
round. Ho was fully six inches Shorter
than his opponent, and 25 pounds lighter.
Comrftencing the second round, Johnson
sent a. hard right to Jeannetto's
body and swung another right for the
ilaw, but Jeannette was out of harm's
way and came back with that bad left
to Johnson's jaw. This appeared to
anger the big champion, and he went
after Jeannette.
Many of his blows, which had steam
enough behind them to drive Jeannette
through the ropes, missed, and as Joannetto
straightened up after each ducking
bee he nearly always managed to
tap Johnson's jaw.
Johnson fought Joe around the ring,
and, finally getting him In a corner,
rained" right and left on his body, one
of which blows went low and Jeannotto
fell.to the mat.
Johnson, not knowing that he had
hurt Jeannette, struck him at least
twice while the latter was falling

 

Whatever the merits of this fight ,they met a week later, and Johnson floored Jeannette 4 times in 6 rounds to take an easy decision.

 

Thanks again, Johnson was 6 foot and one quarter inches,Jeannette, 5 foot 10 inches ,I don't know where they got the 6 inches in height difference from?
We also have no weights for the fight so the 25lbs difference is clearly an estimate.
A year after this fight, 1905, Johnson still only scaled 185lbs, I find it hard to believe that the 26year old Jeannette ,only scaled 160lbs for his fight with Johnson.

I agree Jeannette was not seasoned, but in his second fight ,after beating Johnson, he stopped 46 fight Langford in 8 rds.
