:huh Really? I saw him get caught with many wild shots, on a regular basis. He did score counters in bursts, as Fajardo is no defensive wizard (in fact, gives zero ****s about defense, apparently :yep) but the hardest and most damaging stuff was coming from the Filipino, and even factoring in how much he missed that created a sense of him overwhelming Chihuas. Maybe I'll need to actually sit and score it wide-awake myself, now, to see if my first impression was off.
Round 1: 10-9 Rodriguez Round 2: 10-9 Rodriguez Round 3: 10-9 Rodriguez Round 4: 10-9 Rodriguez Round 5: 10-9 Fajardo Round 6: 10-9 Rodriguez Round 7: 10-9 Fajardo Round 8: 10-9 Rodriguez Round 9: 10-9 Rodriguez Round 10: 10-9 Fajardo 97-93 Rodriguez
Fajardo showed some poise and a solid chin, and did catch Rodriguez with some eye-catching shots, but for the most part, I felt that he was just being outclassed by the champ.
Fajardo landed some wild shots regularly in last round which seemed to bother the Mexican kid. That was the only round Fajardo managed to sustained any consistent offense. A bit late and he was sloppy throughout the contest.Looked like he was fighting on instinct and his body was acting whack just would not behave like he wanted...The kid's legs were crossed up and often off balance how he managed to stay up right is credit to him.Rodriguez should off KTFO Fajardo but didn't maybe had one of those nights. I found Fajardo gallant stand hilarious.
Interesting! Online I've found opinions ranging as widely as the official judges' cards. Some people (not all of them Pinoy, either) thought Fajardo was robbed. Some people (not all of them Mexican) thought Rodriguez did plenty and the draw was unfair to him.
Round 1 Fajardo is out pawing his left jab. Rodriguez ducks in and shows his jab, pulling it. Fajardo swats out at the feints, parrying them downward. Fajardo is jerking back as Rodriguez lunges in with a right hand lead, missing. Fajardo clipped by a left upper-hook while circling. Body jab by Fajardo. Three jabs up top by Fajardo, one downstairs by Rodriguez. Grazing left hook on the hip by Rodriguez. Fajardo wings a big overhand right in the air, stopping it mid-arc with Rodriguez stepping well out of range. Fajardo tosses some light jabs up into Rodriguez's right glove, caught in the palm. Body shots by Rodriguez, torquing in with the left hook, turning at the waist in a fully executed motion. Fajardo misses some wild rights up top, Rodriguez tilting forward and letting them slough over his shoulder. Nice double left hook slapped down across the cheek by Rodriguez. Fajardo drops a pair up top, hitting gloves, head down, backed away by counter left hooks on the body from Rodriguez. Jab into the gloves and wide slicing punches by Fajardo aiming for Rodriguez's chin, missing as he tucks and rotates his upper body. 10-9 Rodriguez
Round 2 Fajardo is pushing jabs at the body and hurling big overhand rights from too far out. Rodriguez is ducking in, face low and covered, spring-loading with a waist turn and exploding with multiple left gavel hooks on the body. Fajardo is tapping up at the guard from a crouch. Looping right on the bicep by Fajardo. Rodriguez shoves him off. Short left and right hooks climbing up over the chest-level arms threshold and into Fajardo's face by Rodriguez as they press together. Fajardo is shying away from the jab, turning his face, squatting in reverse step. Rodriguez puts up goalposts as Fajardo now takes reins, chopping high. Rodriguez blocks and drops a right hand on him while skimming the ropes with his back. 10-9 Rodriguez 20-18 Rodriguez
Round 3 Fajardo is jogging to his left and throwing wide shots at the body from a half-pace out, arms dangling low in between. Fajardo ducks a jab and lands a flush overhand right on the nose. Rodriguez is turning in his left shoulder and crashing into Fajardo, leading with straight-thrust rights at his throat and turning over blind left hooks while falling in hoping to catch Fajardo in mid-dip. Fajardo is staying in a low, knees-bent, heads-up stance, jabbing the body. Rodriguez is chasing with 1-2s, missing as Fajardo bolts into the ropes and then snaps into a trot away from them in a V pattern. Awkward clinch, Fajardo touches down. They lean in and trade vicious underhanded body whips. Big looping right by Fajardo. Rodriguez on his bike. Chopping right hands and left uppercutrs by Fajardo closing it out. Rodriguez's nose is shattered, bloody. 10-9 Fajardo, close, stolen in the second half 29-28 Rodriguez
Round 4 Fajardo is bowing in and hooping big lefts over the top at Rodriguez's neck. Right hands by Rodriguez driving Fajardo into the ropes. Heads clash, accidental. Rodriguez's nose is spouting badly. The ref calls a break and has it looked at. Rodriguez is fine, can breathe. The ringside doctor clears him. Time in. Fajardo is on the attack, jabbing and then hooking with the left with no interruption, slamming down with some rights mainly just to keep his center of gravity balanced, giving Rodriguez no quarter. Rodriguez is hacked into the ropes, tucking his chin and scrubbing at Fajardo's body haplessly. Rodriguez looking a bit weak now, trying with both arms to shove Fajardo away but failing, not finding leverage, standing too upright and not using his lower body. Fajardo is hit with a couple of hooks in the side of the head and under his elbow. Rodriguez taking control, pushing Fajardo across the ring now with punches. Fajardo comes up for air, throwing back, uppercuts into the stomach of Rodriguez with both fists. Fajardo pushes out with his left elbow and forearm to position Rodriguez at perfect hooking range, but Rodriguez leans down on him, draping an arm over Fajardo's neck. Headlock applied by Rodriguez. 10-9 Rodriguez, very close again. 39-37 Rodriguez
Round 5 Fajardo is dancing around with his arms low, hopping in place and waiting for Rodriguez to come at him with flying left hooks. Rodriguez looking a bit ragged on the offensive. Fajardo actually countering with hooks, though not landing cleanly, just glancing off Rodriguez's temples. Fajardo is jumping around Rodriguez in full revolutions, pushing his tiring arms down whenever he lifts them readying a flurry. Fajardo is keeping Rodriguez bunged while remaining an erratic target, bouncing around him and bowling in uppercuts on the body. Fajardo is using the left stiff-arm on the waistband to keep Rodriguez at bay, popping in body shots and dancing away. Fajardo is drilled with a couple of right hand rabbit punches as Rodriguez looms over him. Fajardo ducks very low, face beneath Rodriguez's crotch, letting some jabs whizz by overhead. 10-9 Fajardo 48-47 Rodriguez
Round 6 Fajardo is ripping uppercuts with both hands darting in, then falling back against the ropes as Rodriguez taps down at him with rights from the chin. Jabs on the waistline by Fajardo, sidling in close and then melting away. Rodriguez jumps in, clinch, fist lain against Fajardo's throat. Wild right hands by Rodriguez falling in. Left hook by Rodriguez missing as Fajardo swerves in the pocket. Right hands by Rodriguez timed and countered by up-jabs flicked up from the hip. Fajardo just has more energy, not particularly sharp with his punching but less haggard and disjointed than Rodriguez's. Fajardo circles into a corner, taking hooks on the shoulders and outer arms, head down, then takes his own turn planting uppercuts on Rodriguez's chest. 10-9 Fajardo 57-57
