Anybody else abruptly turning into a raging fan-boy of CRP right now despite having never heard of him twenty minutes ago?

 

Khan scored a few stiff jabs on the face throughout 5th, while Pérez was lingering in the squat too long, admiring his own body work.

This was some well-done matchmaking. What can't you do, Maravilla?!?

 

Pérez regaining control, quick in-and-out jabs, sticking and moving, and scratching at the stomach of Khan with long softball-pitches and hooks while turning him at mid-range. Khan just plodding after him and jabbing the air, back to only landing in the occasional clinch and only with rabbit punches.

If this is all we get for live undercard support before the main event, I'm glad to have it be this and not the women's match. I know that sounds horrible, but..

 

Turns out Khan knows some of the EE tricks, including "the shift" recently re-popularized by Golovkin (and once known as the Dempsey Shift). He just tricked Pérez with it, starting as orthodox and transitioning into southpaw and then back again, landing a nice flush cross with either hand while stutter-stepping inside and out. Pérez was wobbled a bit. Khan is unable to follow-up with anything super effective but is the aggressor, batting at Pérez's ears with both gloves like a marching bass drum.

It has been a really nice back and forth contest, if he can hang on and not lose the eighth (or at least avoid getting dropped) he should deserve the decision IMO..

 

Pérez is rocked by a right cross and sprawled out with a glove brushing the canvas (but ruled a slip) but later Khan himself is hurt, maybe having punched himself out! Ref warns him or maybe docks another point for a foul, not clear what happened. They are trading viciously in the final minute. Khan chasing and headhunting with jabs and stabbing down hard with the right hand as Pérez ducks and rolls quickly off to one side, able to summon up bursts of energy for some fluid, showy defensive moves.

I'm so confused how to score that round. Was there a knockdown? Was there a point deduction?

 

The commentator for EITB scored the eighth 10-9 for Pérez and ended up with a draw, 76-76.

 

Whatever the outcome, this was a nice way to start off a weekend of boxing.

 

I think I just heard "empate" - that's a Spanish word. Means "draw". Do they use a mix of Basque language and Spanish in their country? If so that was the result. Neither man looked too upset. Pérez and Khan touched gloves with polite smiles and quickly exited the ring. Yeah. Thinking it was a draw.
