I hope that his ascent isn't too rapid, though, because it just occurred to me that another of my favorites (whose pro debut came when Jonfer was in diapers, and of whom I was a mega-fan before Jonfer's huevos dropped) is campaigning in the same 130lb sandbox vying for the very same green belt, and now ranked #4 as of today's update:

    https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/cristian-ricardo-lucio-el-diamante-mijares.595216/

I'd hate to see a scenario where the Mexican veteran and Spanish prodigy were to cannibalize each other en route to fulfilling one man's title aspirations. I would be sad to see either of them derail the other. (whether it be Mijares getting brutally KTFO for the first time since Darchinyan, or Jonfer seeing his zero snatched with a thorough shut-out boxing lesson from his elder)

Couple things (gleaned from a rough translation of a recent Basque news article):

    1. The plan is to return once more in 2017, in the USA, on Showtime, to defend the WBC Silver title.
    2. Russian world lightweight contender Petr "Tzar" Petrov (who is currently ranked #16 by the WBC at 135lbs, and hasn't fought below that limit in a decade) has apparently been calling Jonfer out for some reason. :dunno I'd watch that fight..

Isn't Petrov based out of Spain as well?

Oh right I forgot. Maybe he's salty that some upstart punk is stealing his thunder. For a long time Spain didn't have enough homegrown talent for the moderately talented Russian transplant not to shine bright...now he needs to share the spotlight. That explains his motivation in draining himself down a class to challenge a younger undefeated whiz.

Did some digging, turns out Petrov helped Jonfer prep for Podolsky (his nominal countryman, although Petr seems to have adopted Spain as his new home, and not dissimilar in style) and they had an epic six rounds of sparring on August 12th.

Petrov apparently brought the heat and made Jonfer step up his game and bring out his best, for which Tinín Rodríguez was grateful, but there could definitely be clues of a grudge from Petrov, who took a long six year climb between world title bouts and is still probably smarting from his defeat by Terry Flanagan in April, perceiving this kid being groomed and practically having the red carpet rolled out for him by sanctioning bodies, the Spanish press, etc.

Would love to see the full six rounds (or hell, even one) but the most I can find is this meager sampling, under a minute, all in slow motion.

He doesn't even have anything scheduled at the moment and this kid is still doing three-a-days (as in three separate boxing training sessions in a day, something Floyd Mayweather Jr. is known for setting himself apart by doing) plus bikram yoga, and teaching weekly classes.

What do they put in that Básque drinking water?? Guessing petrol because this kid is a machine.

Hi, I've been off for a while :-D

He is expected to fight (vs TBA) on a 10 rounder on 24th January at New York... in a "Di Bella Entertaiment" show. Source:

Basques are known to be rude men... but I think this guy just has a good team around him and they are doing things in a professional way. I hope he delivers another highlight KO in US on january.

It's finally at 7th February at BB King Blues Club & Grill. Might be able to eat a bloody steak while they soften the meat on the ring :-S

Incredibly tall fighter, hits hard, smart, neat boxing style and incredibly mature for his experience, he doesnt look like someone who does stupid things and throws his career. Way better than kerman imho, but he's still a prospect (well, that's the reason of this thread, isn't it?). Anyway, if he evolves as expected, he will be a well known fighter, no doubt.

He's fighting Jose Luis "La Boa" Rodríguez. A good touchstone and an interesting fight on paper.

Absolutely! Rodríguez went the distance with Verdejo and Bogere, so a stoppage over him would be a nice statement for Jonfer.

Nothing witty to add here about the Básque people, but damn this looks good! I might have to order some off of wine.com.
