One thing that no ones really talked about is how good a loser Gus was. To be on the wrong end of a decision like that after going through what he did would have brought out the worst in many people. Gus took it like a true gentleman Never knew much about this guy before the fight, but he's instantly become one of my favourite fighters. Deserves an immediate rematch, and hopefully he gives Jones just as many problems next time around
Jones never took a backward step all night. I think it was his constant coming forward that was viewed as aggression/octagon control that got him the nod. Not sure I think that's how MMA should be judged, but it is. When I watched it live I thought it was a clear win for Gus but watching it again the rounds were a lot closer than they seemed at the time, probably because we are not used to seeing Jones get hit or hurt or stuffed when going for the TD, so it seemed he was getting hammered. And although Jones was busted up he never looked hurt by anything Gus landed, Gus was on the verge of being stopped at the end of Rnd 4 and Jones decided to go for a TD to emphatically win the round rather than finish him off which shows he and his corner thought the fight was close rather feeling they were way behind. I think, for once, Jones and Jackson underestimated Gus and had a terrible game plan. Just as Jones wanted to out-wrestle Sonnen, he wanted to out-strike Gus, beating them at their own game. Gus, however is a very good striker and a very good all round fighter. It looked as though Jones hadn't worked on his wrestling at all and was leaving his chin horribly exposed when throwing that side kick thing to the knee that he does all the time. I see a rematch going differently in Jones favour, this was Gus's best chance and I think he caught Jones when he was a little bit complacent. Jones has the flexibility to bring a different game altogether in the 2nd fight. Both guys have great chins, btw, Jones showed a lot in this fight that people have questioned. He was taken into deep water and toughed it out. He is a proper champion with heart and I think these two will have more than 2 fights. Great stuff.
:yep Not even close. I had Gus winning. But it was so close, I can't complain about it. This fight did prove one thing IMO. And that is that if Jon Jones didn't have that reach and height advantage, he'd be just another wrestler. P4P#1 my ass!!!!!!!!!!
No. Absolutely not. You don't get any special privileges or handicapping in scoring because you are the incumbent champion. That ridiculous mindset is how challengers get robbed.
A lot of the South American stuff is actually internationally streamed (free and legal!) by the broadcaster in the originating country on their website, and it's sometimes decent quality. (like TV Max in Panama for instance) :good
Bad judging is real life? Putting unreasonable demands on challengers to jump through hoops that have nothing to do with the criteria of the sport is "how it works"? OK. Maybe you should just stick to your XBox.
One doesn't get credit for defending a takedown. I keep hearing this and it's nonsense. Even in wrestling, if you're backing up and running from takedowns you get hit with stalling and lose points. Now if Gus had dropped a knee on him as he came in than obviously he should get rewarded but he wasn't making Jones pay for shooting in.
I was referring to the having to take the title from the champ. I dont have X-Box anyway. I dont play video games. And if you dont agree with that statement, of having to TAKE the title, you need to dust off your atari. This is real life, remember. Always been like that, always will. You crying about it wont change it.
It wasn't his height and reach advantage that stopped him tapping to Vitors armbar and It wasn't his height and reach advantage that got him through this fight against Gus. Jones has heart and chin in abundance. 'Just another wrestler'? Ridiculous.
You are wrong. Challengers for a title need do nothing different than needed to win in any other context. The rules do not change to protect the reigning champion. That is absurd. If by "it's always been like that", you mean in the minds of many ignorant fans and sadly a number of poorly educated judges in combat sports - well, yes. It shouldn't be - or ever have been that way, however.
For the record. The phrase 'You have to beat the champ to be the champ' is an old boxing adage that refers to the fact that if a fight is a draw the belt doesn't change hands. People get this twisted and think it somehow means to have to completely dominate a champ to get the win. Fights are judged round by round and subconsciously a ref might give a close round to the champ, but apart from that this saying is meaningless.
I guess you don't understand the politics then? Would have thought you would have. Oh well. That's how it's always been, that's how it always will be. Every sport with judging is the same. Figure Skating prime example (other than boxing/mma). Football is based on how good the team is. So are other team sports.
