Fightmetric can be a misleading resource at times because what they calculate as "significant strikes" also includes every single type of kick, even of the weak tapping variety. Much of the strikes that Jones landed were non-effective light connects. I'm not even sure of the validity of those numbers. In the beginning of the 4th round they showed Gus having some insane striking edge for head strikes, it was like 80-15 or something. There was also a very suspicious post fight changing of fightmetric strikes landed on the ufc website. Many people took screenshots which showed Gus outlanding Jones and much of the action looked like it was going that way. Sorry the flush uppercuts and straight right hands that made Jones head spin like a pinball and turned his face to hamburger meat were flat out more effective. The fact that he took Jones out of his element also has to account for something. Jones wanted to go to the ground where he could find a safe space but he wasn't allowed to. Gus even took him down and established some some momentary octagon control which is also significant too.
Just watched the first again. FightMetric's numbers look accurate for that round, and Jones' strikes were harder. Jones' leg kicks, spinning back kicks to the body and elbow just before the end of the round are the hardest shots landed in that period. Gus did land the glancing right hand that cut Jones in the first, but you know that the majority of the damage done to Jones' face was done over the course of 5 rounds. It's not like they were discussing stopping the fight because Jones had his "face turned to hamburger meat" in the corner between the first and second rounds. There is a time display for most, if not all of the round. Feel free to tell where Gustaffson makes Jones head "spin like a pinball" in the first. I'll go back and watch it.
