Who do you like in this fight? Segura has slow feet, throws wide punches, and was taken apart by Edgar Sosa in his last fight with straight punching and basic but smart boxing. Gonzalez has a nice technical foundation like Sosa and also better hand and foot speed so my first inclination was that he wins. But after taking a further look at some fights of his now I'm not sure if he has the smarts or durability to beat someone as experienced and relentless as Segura. Odds just popped up at Bet365 and I'm considering making a pick.
Are there any boxing fans here? This fight is I think the second most intriguing this weekend, behind just Kovalev-Cleverly.
It's a great match-up, no doubt! When you posted this, however, the sun was barely up in the East coast and not yet begun to rise on the West...so at least speaking for the Americans hardly anyone was awake yet. :yep Segura I think is going to come into this knowing he can't afford to lose. Dealing out Bomba's first defeat could nudge him up the rankings enough to set up another stab at the WBO belt, which has changed hands since his last try. (Segura vs. Estrada would be a FOTY candidate.) A misstep here would mean two in a row and three of four - putting him pretty far out to sea with no dry land in sight. Expect cojones to the wall malice from the Aztec Warrior. Jonathan Gonzalez - not to be confused with his larger countryman Jonathan "Mantequilla" Gonzalez, who is vastly inferior p4p - is a very tidy boxer and certainly has more finesse to his game than Segura, not to mention speed...but this is a monumental leap up for the kid and he will have never encountered anything like Segura's pressure and power. The former amateur star will need to stay on his toes and pop and move, which he can do... and not think Segura is someone he can knock out despite his own high KO rate feasting mostly on tomato cans. Toss in the national pride of the Mexico vs. PR rivalry (of which Segura is a big part of recent lore) and this is very appealing indeed. :good You may be right that it's #2 this weekend after Cleverly vs. Kovalev - although Geale vs. Barker and Miura vs. Thompson are both neck and neck with it.
Thanks for the response. I'm on the west coast but I've been up all night, so my brain isn't working well right now to say much. I too like Gonzalez and think his temperament is to box so he won't be tempted to slug at all, but I'm not so confident he'll be savvy enough under fire to remain as sharp as Sosa was against Segura. But I went ahead with a small bet on Gonzalez. This weekend is loaded enough that I won't bother with Thompson-Miura, I guess I'm not the hard-core fan you are.
It will be a war, but, Segura will break him dowb round bty round and stop the young man between rounds 7-10.
Oh man, you'll be missing some fireworks. They're more likely to stand and trade bombs than Gonzalez is with Segura (in spite of his nickname)
Segura by late TKO. Its to early for Gonzalez. ... and its Mexico vs. Puerto Rico. Mexico wins this almost every time.
It might be possible to watch all three Western hemisphere main events on Saturday night. (Geale vs. Barker, Miura vs. Thompson and Gonzalez vs. Segura) The HBO card starts at 9:45pm EST and begins with tape-delayed coverage of Kovalev vs. Cleverly, followed by a triple-header. So Geale and Barker won't be in the ring until well after midnight. The Fox Deportes card headlined by Miura vs. Thompson begins at 10pm EST and ought to be over by midnight. What time is the Gonzalez vs. Segura PPV starting, anyone know?
