I agree, had he fought Jones and Hopkins at a relevant junction and lost he would still have enhanced his reputation as a British great. Incidentally I think he would have outpointed Hopkins at any stage but lost to prime or even remotely in the vicinity of prime Roy Jones. Lacey is undoubtedly a lesser fighter post Calzaghe imo. I'm not saying he was an unstoppable wrecking machine before the fight by any means but he has looked more morose and pensive against decent (Tsypko) and very poor (Manfredo) opposition who I believe he would have knocked out prior to his dismantling against JC. You're right though, the lack of a knockout raises questions but he had hand problems going into the fight. Time will tell with Kessler. He is a dangerous fighter though who was simply bamboozled by Calzaghe's movement and rapid fire jabs. I suppose I am a nuthugger in some people's book.
What a crappy match up. I would prefer Pavlik to show how a threat Kelly really Is, Joe would make Pavlik look like an amateur as well.
Just because It went to points didn't mean he didn't destroy him. He undoubtly destroyed him. His cuffing punches busted him up still but he's throwing so many that he's keeping them up on their feet while hurting them.
do people really think this will be his last fight? its strange people are calling jones shot, yet he plans to fight on if he wins
A unified champion Is more than euro level, Kessler's not elite but he's a solid world class fighter and gave a better effort against Joe than likes of Pavlik would If Joe fought him.
Find It strange that Frank's suing Joe, yet had nothing bad to say In his article too. Is Rafael full of **** sometimes?
I think this is a little harsh. Although I admit that his record isn't exactly littered with greats in their prime, he clearly was (I think it's fair to speak in the past tense now) a very good effective fighter. It is such a shame that he was never tested against the best opposition possible but as you pointed out, he hasn't chased the right people at the right time. As a Calzaghe supporter for a long long time, I am hugely disappointed about him taking this fight - if I were him I would be massively embarrased after rubbishing RJJ for the last few years. The only justification I can see from this is if he knows he has nothing left. This is a money fight for him, nothing more.
Might as well fight De La Hoya, this is another example of the kind of celebrity boxing that's come in in modern times. Money before glory every time
Not sure yet. Calzaghe is a free agent and may decide to sell the rights to Sky as he may make more money from PPV sales. If it's not on Setanta then maybe we should demand our subscriptions back since they've been using the fact that the next Calzaghe fight will be on Setanta to gain customers. So if the Calzaghe fight ends up on Sky then surely that must go against the Trade Descriptions Act .
Typical Joe C fighting Jones. Im backing Jones to knock JC out. Even half a RJJ will be to much for JC
'I would never want to fight him now. He's not the same fighter and I'd have nothing to gain by beating a shadow of what he once was. Jones was a great fighter in his day and a great name, but he's been knocked out twice, knocked out cold. What would I have to gain by knocking him out for a third time?'. :rofl
