After predicting the Hopkins Pavlik fight I started thinking about the Novembr 8 match up between Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones Jr . What are people's predictions ? Whats the best stragedy for Roy to pull off the upset ? I think Roy's best stragedy should be an effective body attack . Its going to be interesting to see these two letting their hands go but in order for Roy to slow down Joe he has to start to the body . In a perfect world i'd like to see Roy duplicate the body punch he gave Virgil Hill but that was ions ago .What will be the key to Roy's sucess aaginst Joe ?
roy not being timid, he has one punch power, he needs to let his hands go, not lay on the ropes. roys chin hasnt been tested in a while, so that high guard he utilized against tito ala winky will serve him well.
Judging by previous perfomances i think calzaghe will take this on points. He will start to pull away in the second half of the fight due to his workrate, which jones at his tender age may struggle to keep up with, although he is a top athelete. Also Calzaghe has a top quality chin therefore i see there being little hope of jones KOing him
He does but Hopkins was able to drop him as did Byron Mitchell ..Jones hits harder than both ! It all depends on what Jones has left ..I would not be surprised if Jones were to drop Calaghe ..Keeping him down is a whole nother issue !
Being dropped, and being ktfo, happens because the fighter doesn't see the shot coming. Jones is probably the fastest fighter Calzaghe has faced, and is a bigger puncher than Hopkins. Calzaghe is painfully susceptible to overhand rights, he's not as quick or agile as he once was (which kept him from losing in the past). Calzaghe's conditioning and workrate are top notch, of course, but he's not the fighter he used to be, and Jones just needs one good, quick shot on the chin to end it. Or not.
While this fight will definetely not be a repeat of the Eric Lucas fight, I do see Jones being able to pot shot and stun Calzaghe, making Joe less eager to come straight forward. Plus, this may sound bad but I don't see Jones losing to a white guy.
Calzaghe will have learnt from his mistake to Hopkins and will be conscious about the right hands, but as has been stated, Jones is a hell of a lot faster than Hopkins. And to be fair, any shot that has put Calzaghe down he has not seen coming yet he has always got up well afterward. After the first 6 rounds its calzaghe's fight to my eyes
LOL. It happens to the best of them: Hopkins, for instance. If this fight were at 168, I think this would be a walk for Calzaghe, but he has no power at 175, and can't take the shots as well at that weight. I would not be surprised at all by an upset, though Calzaghe should take this. But I think it's going to be closer than people think .
Joe will win a wide UD or by a late TKO There is no way in hell Jones can handle his pressure and workrate at this stage. Jones crumbled against Johnson's pressure. He got outworked by Tarver in the third fight FFS, and Tarver is a very measured fighter and was exhausted in the last third of the fight Anyone thinking that Jones is going to suddenly look like himself 10 years ago is hoping for a miracle. There is no way he can handle the pace that Joe's going to set. People who actually think Jones is going to KO Calzaghe are nuts. Jones hasn't stopped anyone in SIX YEARS, and has lost 3 fights in that span against opponents that aren't in Calzaghe's league Jones will get tired after 3-4 rounds and end up lying on the ropes as Joe slaps him silly
this will be a replay of the Glen Johnson fight. Jones has a Glass Jaw and he is scared to get hit he was cautious against Trinidad a former Welterweight :rofl Calzaghe will (T)KO Jones in the later rounds just like Glen Johnson did.
I'm picking Jones by uppercut stoppage lol. I'm hoping this happens at least. Jones used to be able to hit you with every type of punch he could think of or make up, and he relished you coming at him so that you could run into his counters. Cal is taller than Jones, uses the jab, and goes to the body. Jones is going to find if difficult to hit Cal, while Cal is in front of him. Jones can do this for the first part of the fight, but can he do this for the WHOLE fight. I'm hoping he can. Jones has to meet Cal center ring and score early, and then bring Cal to the ropes is where Jones will do his damage. He has to change Cal's mind and strategy about the fight. If he can score early and hard on Cal, he has a chance. I never used to doubt Roy's physicality on a fight as he used to "keep the heat on em" as he always said. The move to heavy and back down diminished him greatly, but he may have one last performance left in him. If Roy loses, he was once great who fell hard. If Cal loses, he could lose all of his respect. Jones by tko in 8. Cal has more of a chance to win than Jones at this point, but I have to root for Jones. Jones was my boy long before I started liking Cal.
Over the years I've learned not to try and understand the psychology of a fighter, and in order to predict certain outcomes you have to know if an athlete is suffering from mental issues. Roy Jones is a very special case. I have no idea how he'll show up. The confience of Roy Jones is still not 100% all the way back. Will he be ready? Maybe, but until I see him in the ring I have no basis for a prediction. Phsyically he can win, of course, but he's facing one of the strongest minds, and wills, in the sport. This ought to be very interesting, that's all that can be said.
