How the hell can anyone think Tarver one? He threw a grand total of 26 power punches between rounds 3-6. And In another round he threw a grand total of 7. He GAVE away 5 rounds to an obvious to us now, slowing, older Roy, who was drained from coming back down from HW.
he had moments where he would flurry but tarver totally gave this fight away. some people had a fit because jones hadn't been in a fight that close. tarver is a decent fighter but he's basically had a one punch career and even with that punch he needed a second chance to land.
I think he was given more credit than he had earned, because people were used to RJJ seeming untouchable, Roy was physically exhuasted for that fight and spent far too much time on the ropes giving the impression that Tarver was the aggressor and controlling the fight. (Two of the main scoring criteria, Effective Aggressivness, and Ring Generalship.) Tarver won the event, Roy Jones won the fight.
That's what I don't get, thing is the day people were desperate to see Roy lose, and since Tarver actually brought the fight to him and caused some facial damage people are quick to credit that as a win for tarver. People didn't really credit body work hat much untilCotto started getting hot and commentators were actually giving credit for body work. Roy won that fiht clearly, even though it was a close one, but clear one too.
I can kind of agree to the event being won by Tarver.... but only because that people hadn't seen Jones in such a tough of fight. But there is no way Tarver won this fight, and the fact is, he gave it away, but I'll tell you this, Jones WON IT, and WANTED IT in the 11th and 12th.
Oh I know. Roy landed time and time again clean right hook body shots on Tarver. I think that had a big effect on making Tarver try to just walk into Jones with his jab.
Yes but there were 3 rounds where Tarver did absolutely nothing. 3-5 he threw 8 power punches I believe. atsch What was he expecting?
The point is that Roy had looked unbeatable for years, he'd hardly lost a round since the first Griffin fight, meaning that the crowd was bound to get excited when somebody eventually managed to be competitive with him. You're right that Roy won the fight, I had it 115 - 113, and he won it in the final rounds, one body shot at a time. If he'd of retired there, he'd be considered the greatest fighter of his era by most. (I still do but his performances after this fight have opened it up for debate.)
He should have definitely, but he definitely has opened it for debate. He clearly lost something after coming back down from Ruiz, which was a huge win now that we look back on it. And that will be held again him forever.
not forever. 10-15 years from now fans will just talk about how good jones was at his best. no one talks about ezzard charles' 25 losses or ray robinson's 19 losses. jones will be remembered as one of the best to step in the ring.
I only watched this fight live, and that's it. And whilst I wasn't making an effort to score it, I did feel Tarver won. I'll need to watch it again to give a proper verdict.
I agree up until that point RJJ was never in a tough fight and use to win 90% of the rounds. Tarver did nothing hardly from rounds 3-8. I had RJJ winning 8-4.
