Nonsense. Calzaghe didn't land any effective punches

Roy's ribs were bruised up and his face was disfigured by the wind created by Joe's weak slaps

    "I couldnt figure him out"

That to me really exemplifies why Calzaghe won more than anything else.

Say what you want about Prime RJJ, but as I have said before, the man was never a great boxer, but a fighter with very fast hands and feet and reflexes. He didnt "outbox" opponents or outthink, he won by the principle of "speed kills".

Why do I mention this? Because for all his vaunted physical abilities in his Prime RJJ would still face the same situation of "figuring out" Calzaghe. And if he couldnt do it now at this age and with this many fights, he couldnt have done it then.

I am not saying the Calzaghe would dominate RJJ Prime. But it would be a much more even fight than most here make out. It would NOT be a "RJJ TKO 6". That is is utter nonsense. Calzaghe has never been seriously hurt, and RJJ has not ever KOed an elite 175 fighter to begin with. It would be a decision and frankly it would be likely be a rather even fight.

I think Roy Jones has the style 2 beat Calzaghe just not a 39yr old version of roy jones. Re-watch the fight mexican jew, be4 the cut Rj was landing some good shots, after the cut he was out of it. RJ lost from his ability 2 threw punches, Calzaghe landed that one good shot 2 open him up. Everything else was just work rate 2 a decision. Roy landed a lot of good single shots but couldnt follow up.
Roy cannot beat those type of fighters at this age with his current style, he would have 2 re-invent himself, but its 2 late for that now

It's a bittersweet night for me. I'm one of the rare people on here who liked both fighters and Roy was who got me in the sport. I've been a Calzaghe fan for years as well. While I'm glad Calzaghe's finally getting some recognition as the great fighter he is and finally got some truly big fights, I don't like seeing Roy going out bloody, busted, and beaten like that, either. At least he had the balls to finish the fight.

Good post. Once RJJ's reflexes diminished the cupboard was pretty much empty. It's easy to pull out the old retroactive BS that we see all the time like "if only this fight was X amount of years ago." Calzaghe gets so much criticism from people on this board and frankly, I thought it would have subsided after the Kessler fight.

Roy must have been sickened that he put him down and within a round or 2 JC's sticking his chin out to dry!

That uppercut from Roy in the 6th would have put most fighters on their arse no question but Joe being Joe goes to war!

    Joe has great whiskers!:good
