In fairness Roy was pretty much a human punching bag and Joe still hit his guard 9 out of 10 times. Calzaghe dominated him as expected but if it proved one thing, its that he does not hit hard. This fight certainly isn't one that you should pick if you are trying to credit Calzaghe's power punching.

    Excellent post.

This is the reason RJJ hasn't aged as well as Hopkins, because RJJ's abilities were based upon reflexes more so than skill or technique.

What you're saying here is what Manny and Kellerman were saying as well. That is, Joe would have always been a challenge for RJJ, even the prime version, because of his style.

That doesn't mean RJJ wouldn't win, but it would not be some walkover like a Bryant Brannon or Richard Frazier. Calzaghe is a very special fighter.

So true. People are always acting like Joe would be a bum for a 27 years old Jones. No.

I agree with you post but not that part. I mean...Babe Ruth was never a good baseball player...he just hit the ball hard...

Joe has had a career of trouble with broken hands, and does not punch with full force because of it.

Its the irony of claiming that hopkins and Jones are past it: Calzaghe can no longer punch with impunity at all, and thus, has lost almost as much.

    You cannot compare the two.

I am talking in terms of boxing ability pertaining to ring generalship, Defensive ability, countering and the like. BHop being an excellent example of a fighter with no great physical gifts but knows how to use his footwork, not being fleet of foot, but positioning himself out of range against an opponent, being defensively sound in dodging and countering punches, using the ring to his advantage, and through observation beating an opponent by nullifying his best attributes by modifying his punches and maneuvers.

RJJ never showed any of those things. He was fast and hard to hit. But he would pull straight back from shots, bounce out of the way, and relied on his speed to land a shot when his opponents got frustrated at him being so quick.

Without his legs, he would just lie on the ropes and then wait till he could burst open with a multitude of shots. Was he accurate? Yes. Does that win you fights? Not when you are covering up 2/3rds of a round and cant knock an opponent out.

Or as Cobb said, Ruth runs good for a fat man...and No, Babe was a great ball player and a dammed good pitcher too...Able to hit for top10-15 average all time, too. Who once tried to win the batting crown and finished I think third with a lousy 395.

I have said what MJ said, a speed demon who never learned to box properly. Who never unified at any weight and never tried, who had in his HBO contract, they were not allowed to mention DM, who he dodged for 7 years, Dodged Tua of all people and Vittilie too as his heavy mandatories.
Jones got by for years with air breaks...as his opponents stood there and watched him breath, wondering what Jones was going to do next. Johnson proved put the pressure on Jones and he runs out of air. Of course one had to be good with dammed good basics to do that. Johnson took the heart out of Jones. Travar he could say was a lucky punch, but Johnson gutted him like a fish. He never tried for a championship after that...and Cruiser was open.
I don't or didn't care for Cal until he finally started fighting the very best...after all, Cal dodged Ottka.:blood Now that would have been a fight worth seeing. Now I give the edge to Cal, then I'd favored Ottka.:rasta

A very old boxing saying, once the legs go, they are gone and never come back.

What happened? Before the fight everyone was cheering for Roy - lots of predictions were made - and now this ****: I was never a particular fan of Calzaghe but: He is an ATG and very likely p4p no 1.
    GET OVER IT.

I am pissed! I lost my bet unjustly!

I have read the fight recaps, and it sounds like it could have been stopped any time after the 6th, because Jones was doing nothing!

Obviously, the fix was in! I demand that the relevant authorities be sacked!

So...Joe offered two belt Ottka 30% to come to Wales, and much less than he was getting at home. Until Cal fought Hopkins, he too never fought outside home.
