They became so because he stayed too long. No one raised such questions before he was over the hill. Had he retired when he should have (after Ruiz, or after Tarver (1) at latest), his chin would never get a mention, and nobody would be making fool hypotheticals today regarding a prime RJJ and Tommy.
There were always questions about his heart/chin. There just wasn't any definitive proof either way until later in his career.
Hearns KO in 6, Hearns too brilliant of a boxer-puncher and marksman to let Roy get away with the things he does inside the ring, and honestly...with Hearns power speed and range it'll only take one shot to put Roy away but at the same time, all Roy would have to do is land once himself, so i'd say the fight goes to the better technically sound and better boxer which is Hearns
This fails for several reasons, the Jones that showed his flaws was passed prime and no longer the Jones of the past. You mention how we got to see his flaws later on in his career, this argument falls apart when one considers that A, Jones was no longer in his prime and B you are assuming that in his prime he never was hit flushed the way Johnson or Tarver hit him. The latter would be your best bet, but there was a thread posted showing Jones getting nailed with some pretty vicious shots, add the fact that the later version of Jones fought in heavy weight and never was the same Jones when he came back down in weight. I only mention the thread since it helps illustrate my point. Just to make thing easier, using your logic, lets turn Jones into an 80 year old man that is fighting in the ring. Now we have someone punch him in the face and instantly he goes down. There was no movement or anything just an old man that went down. Using your logic we now have uncovered a flaw with Jones and that is he had no head or foot movement and was suspectible to uber slow punches that any normal boxer can see a mile away. This is why people talk about primes my friend, its because one cannot make these kind of analysis's with an out of prime fighter, since we don't know how much of it is still left or what exactly has deteriorated from said fighter. Jones was a beast in his prime and Tarver got to get a free ride off of a Jones that has lost it. IMO Roy KO's Hearn
I go for Jones. Prime for Prime I consider Hearns the better fighter (just). But Hearns was never a great middleweight IMO.
Jones was one weight under his peak weight & Hearns was one weight over his peak weight but Tommy showed to be vulnerable vs lesser fighters (Barkely) & not as hard one punch hitters (Hagler) as Jones so I go Jones by TKO late on or maybe a UD. Ps. Tommy could still catch him cold, dangerous fight to bet big on.
Hearns TKO ... late rounds ... Hearns was knocked out in a scheduled 15 round match against Leonard who put fourth a greater effort than anyone. Leonard was a tall welterweight himself, but Hearns was a freak of nature. At the time they fought Hearns was the WBA champion and had like 32-0 with 31KO's. Hagler really had an incredible win streak, and I think he beat Leonard in that fight they had ... he was a beast and considering that he's one of the best middleweights of all-time, doesn't say much about Hearns losing to him. Barkely was a beast as well ... you gotta look at the era ... it wasn't all about flash and dash ... it was more about power, brute force, and boxing ability. There weren't too many mismatches in that era, as it was in Jones' era. I can tell you this ... Hearns was still fast at MW ... still strong ... and had a great left jab ... probably one of the best in history. He also had a decent chin ... alot of players get knocked out and with his style its only a matter of time, but it doesn't take anything away from him as a fighter. TKO in a 12 or 15 round fight ... Hearns is very good ... bigger physically than Jones ... just as fast ... and probably a better boxer. Jones was physically head above water over most of his opponents ... he never showed good defense ... it was always about speed and reflexes ... and if i'm not mistaken ... that division for quite some time (LHW) during the Jones era was very weak.
Yes he had. Watch his one punch KO s of Tate at MW, and Kelly (Right hand) and Griffin (left hand). Two of these were undefeated and Tate never been stopped, but went in two against Jones.
His career was at its end. Ali lost to Spinks and Holmes and Berbick. Prime Jones would have stopped Tarver and Johnson on the same night.
hard pick.:think roy always had problems with jabbers and tommy had one of the best jabs. many people underrate rj's defense because he mostly fought with his hands down, but his footwork was his defense and had alot of upper body movement. i think tommy was still a more complete fighter than roy and would win the first parts of the fight, while roy would come on strong in the second half, connect cleaner with each round, and possibly win by late tko, but it could go either way. when tommy would lose, it'd be usually by ko, but nobody outboxes him, that's why if roy would win it'd have to be by ko imo.
No one other than his haters ever questioned his heart and chin ..The man proved untochable for over a decade stop with your hate !
