I just watched Calzaghe-Jones again - can't believe that is the same fighter in there, Jones. that is. The Jones with Joe looks motionless compared to the punching machine that he was against Lacy. Sure, Lacy ain't no Calzaghe, but Jones' whole demeanor was different in those fights....
I think Jones and Hopkins took Calzaghe way too lightly. Notice that in both fights, Calzaghe was dropped early. And to some extent, he was "schooled". However, what Jones and Hopkins were not expecting was that this guy was going to throw a billion punches a round. If you don't knock Joe C out, you will lose, plain and simple. He just outworks you. And these two guys, Hopkins and Jones, are just too old to hang with him there. Hopkins gassed and Jones looked like he was hoping for another single punch. However, Jones definitely no longer has "killer instinct". It would be interesting to know if he lost it just from those two brutal knockouts or whether something else went on in his life. especially against targer the last time, jones looked like he just had no will to take chances.
After Lacy got his arse handed to him by JC he was never going to be the same fighter, however your point is interesting as to Jones looking more active against Lacy than he did against JC My answer to that would be that Jones knew Lacy's style was made for him, wereas JC has his own style that no-one has ever managed to emulate or figure out, Jones began to struggle with JC's punch output Lacy's was very low, Overall i think Jones was cautious against JC and i think he knew he didn't need to be vs Lacy hence the second embarrasing defeat Lacy sufferd
atsch hear we go with the "he was never that good to begin with" **** :verysad Did he not get the most embarrasing defeat an undefeated champ could ever want to suffer? i think so, thats the point i was trying to make :hi:
I'll believe Jones on this one. He said and I quote: "I didn't have a strategy when I fought Joe." He didn't have a strategy therefore he didn't know how to beat him. To me, he looked like a different fighter in the ring that night. He also was more confident in his interviews leading up to the Lacy fight and after. If Jones was as prepared and confident as he was against Lacy, he certainly would have gave Joe a much tougher fight. He possibly would have jumped on him in the first and possibly would have stopped him as Joe is cold in the first round and might have been taken by suprise. Keep in mind Roy is still a great finisher.
Do you think he would have beat Joe if he had a gameplan? JC is a very tricky fighter to work out, He always seems to find a way, at this stage in Jones carrer i cant see him beating JC at all gameplan or not but thats just my opinion
Partly down to Calzaghe thought. You see how Lacy got smacked by JC and it aint hard to notice he weaknesses and formulate a plan around that. How the hell do you go about beating Calzaghe?
Davies and AndrewFFC. I realized that if Roy had seen this he possibly would have won by an early KO. Joe was usually very cold to start the fight as you saw in his fights with Hopkins, Kessler and Jones. You saw him get decked by Hopkins and Jones and lost the early rounds to Kessler. I feel if Jones came out with guns blazing he would floor Joe as he did in their fight. If he would have jumped on Joe and threw everything at him, I feel he would have gotten Joe at out of there. Instead, you saw Jones sit back and wait for Joe to clear the cob webs out of his head. That's pretty much the only way I could see Jones winning at this point because he won't outwork him. Stylistically Joe is all wrong for Jones at this point but he had one flaw that was overlooked by Jones and could've won him the fight.
Since the Calzaghe destruction, Lacy has become a circus act milking his past glories for whatever dollars he can make before retiring. Jones was a different fighter against Calzaghe because Calzaghe is a great boxer and is really, really difficult to fight. It's not only the volume of punches, it's the footwork, use of distance and his very awkward and unpredictable style. Roy got lucky 1st round by catching Calzaghe with his forearm, not his glove. From thereon out, Jones got schooled and abused. Don't let the Lacy win fool you. Roy is done.
Agree with you there, he should have taken advantage, and all i remember thinking was, **** Hopkins all over again, but Jones like Hopkins didn't take advantage although JC was'nt as hurt from the Hopkins KD than he was from the Jones KD
Calzaghe had a massive work rate as someone mentioned earlier BUT it is the way he can adjust to any situation than made him hard to beat and impossible to get a gameplan aswell the Kessler fight is a prime example of that. Look at Pavlik vs Hopkins and Hatton vs Mayweather that is an example of not ad******g when your tactics are not working ? Froch would be the same thats why I always used to laugh when he called Calzaghe out!!!!
