Jones vs Calzaghe

The only person who should be embarrassed is Joe. He would never have gotten in the ring with a prime Roy, he even tried to back out of the Lacy fight until Frank W threatened him. He then dismissed Roy on two occasions before fighting him, four years after Johnson had destroyed him! Wow! Roy embarrassed very good-great fighters in his prime. Roy was untouchable at 26/27. When Joe was was 27 he was struggling with Robin Reid. Joe knows Roy would have knocked him the **** out in his prime.

 

I know fans desperately wanted Roy to turn back the clock, and maybe some thought he could knock him out, but Roy was shot at elite level and compared to what he once was. That's not an opinion, it's a fact. Like I said, Joe himself said that Roy was shot.

Who were the fanboys that thought Roy was back to his best after Lacy? People on here? He was approaching 41, and it was obvious to anyone with a brain in their head that Roy couldn't compete at elite level. They must have had a hell of a shock after Green had knocked him out.

I don't give Glen a lot of credit for his win, but if you do I respect that. But that was 4 years earlier. I just don't know how you can give Joe credit after he said he didn't want to fight Roy, because he was shot and it was pointless etc. Joe knew he wasn't the same, and like you say it was a cash out fight. He then retired and said there was nobody else to fight and nothing left to achieve.

If you said you gave him credit for cashing out and retiring at the right time etc, then I'd understand. But it puzzles me that you give him lots of credit for the actual win, after what Joe had said, and considering the stage where Roy was at that point in his career. It doesn't make sense.

 

Funny thing is, these Jones detractors won't believe anything Jones fanboys say, but will use their predicitions later on as some sort of proof of Jones not being shot.

Jones himself made the statement that he did not go fight him because it was too risky be it in the UK or states...he stated that on National TV while commentating on Calzaghe/Hopkins those words exactly get a copy of the fight and find out yourself....If Jones said it himself then any argument you have is out the window because Jones stated nothing about why should I have...I was ranked #1 he was ranked # whatever he said...IT WAS TOO RISKY FOR ME AT THAT TIME ESPECIALLY IF I HAD TO GO TO THE UK... he added nothing in on it....

Former four-division champion Roy Jones Jr, speaking with The Sunday Times, responded to Joe Calzaghe's recent claim of chasing Jones for several years and being brushed aside. Calzaghe spoke with The Sunday Mirror and appeared to have some newfound hostility when Jones' name came up.

"I spent five or six years chasing Jones and he acted like he never even knew my name," said Calzaghe. "Suddenly, I beat Hopkins in Vegas and Jones wants to be my neighbor - it's ridiculous. If a fight with Jones made sense from a cash point of view, then it could happen, but he is notorious for asking for too much money."

Jones says that he viewed Calzaghe as a possible opponent several years ago, but at the time he saw no reason to travel to Wales to chase the fight. Now that Calzaghe is the bigger star, Jones is willing to make the fight anywhere.

“I saw Joe as a potential opponent a long time ago,” Jones said. “But I had my eyes on higher things, such as winning the heavyweight title, so it was nothing against Joe, I love everything about him. He’s a fun guy, an entertaining guy, a good person. We took some pictures together with his sons after the fight on Saturday and we’ve talked on the phone. But boxing is business. When I was the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world it wouldn’t have been smart for me to go and fight Joe.

”You don’t go to somebody else when you’re the best, they must come to you, so I wouldn’t take the risk, and why would I? Why would I meet that challenge when I’m already the best? Why would I go to your country and give you a chance to allow the powers that be to take a close decision and give it to you?"

Jones says a fight with Calzaghe is the best fight in boxing, even better than a possible rematch between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr, scheduled for September.

“But right now this is the best fight out there, better than the Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather rematch because we all know what the outcome of that fight is going to be – another win for Floyd. You don’t know the outcome of this fight, however, so it’s a fight people are going to want to see. There’s suspense, and that’s what makes for a big fight," Jones says.

And I don't put much stock into the statements that were made to promote the fight. And I have also seen it broken down about Joe saying he chased Roy for 6 years, he was talking out of his ass.

 

800+ words written by Bailey in that last post yet none explain the comments Joe himself said, quoted on the previous page. Try harder.

It amazes me the boxing ignorance of some many American posters on here who assume Calzaghe was in his prime when he fought Borenard and Roy Jones, when the truth is that he was about FIVE years past his prime and had glass hands.

 

This is why ive said its a case of both when it comes to responsibilty as to why the fight never happened sooner aswell as other factors like Tv companys, Risk factors etc. Its rather sad how Calzaghe detractors chose to ignore such stuff , yet are so quick to turn the coin when it comes to Jones

Where have you seen Joe made those comments or the rest of the article?
What the post and highlight clips I show is that Calzaghe was pushing for a fight with Jones and calling him out, all the way back in 2000, so if that comment meant what you want to claim it does, then how come you cant answer to when he was calling Jones out back in 2000

Many didnt see Calzaghe until he beat Lacy. You and I watched his career unfold.
I recall him calling out Jones.
There is an article that I put as a link where Jones said he wanted to drop back to SMW and Calzaghe agreed to face Jones, yet Jones chose not to.
I dont blame Jones, he had things he wanted to do like win a HW title, but Calzaghe was calling him. These people forget how Collins, Nunn, Michalczewski, Calzaghe, Benn, Eubank, Rocchigiani, All never got the fight even when calling out

Roy admits what? that he is shot, and no one should buy the fight?

I don't doubt Roy knew of Calzaghe, but I do think both were talking out of their ass to promote their fight, this is how it works. I have seen posters break down that in those 6 years, Joe did very little to "chase" Roy. Along with other comments Joe made about not chasing Roy, and knowing his limitations, I would have to think Joe was full of ****. Roy was gonna say anything to make money, he was just thankful to be back on the big stage.

You still can't explain the statements Calzaghe made about Roy no longer being a great fighter, but then fighting him anyway.
