yet ironically, that ended up being Calzaghe's last fight, and Jones has gone on to fight 7 more times since then. (who would have guessed that on the night) after the show, Lampley and the HBO crew were talking about future Calzaghe fights. to be fair, i don't think Jones was shot to bits against Calzaghe. he was winning the fight early, but then when Roy got cut it changed the fight. it's been hit-or-miss with Jones since he moved back down from HW and lost a lot of his muscles, but it's not accurate to say he's been shot to bits in every fight since then. against Ajamu and Hanshaw, he looked better. Against Trindad and Sheika he was solid but not dazzling. against Lacy and Hopkins, he was game and had good movement and reflexes. I think his recent performances has a lot do with weight fluctuations. He gained nearly 25 pounds from when he fought Hopkins in 2010 (175 lb) to when he fought Lebedev in 2011 (198¼ lbs). He only weighed 193 lb when he fought John Ruiz in 2003, right before the cruiserweight limit was increased from 190 lbs to 200 lbs. So against Lebedev at cruiser, he weighted the most of his career. then he dropped down to 193 for Alexander, then down to 183¾ for Glazewski. so the last few years have really been similar to 2003-2004, and i think it explains his performance. i think Roy has better footwork and is lighter on his feet at Light Heavyweight. but he has to really work to make the weight now. I think one of the reasons he moved up to cruiser is because he doesn't want to work as hard to make light heavy, with his commentary duties now. but you lose speed and energy when you gain and lose weight, especially at an advanced age.
I can agree with some of this, but I do believe Roy has been shot to bits since his knockout loss to Tarver. Roy still can occasionally turn back the clock, but it is always against other shot fighters, or prime fighters that are not very good.. Every time Roy steps back up to the elite level, or fights a live dog, he gets brought back down.. I don't think he looked good against Hanshaw, and Hanshaw was a complete nobody, had Roy on the ropes and had much success against Roy.. It was a life and death fight for Roy, and if not for the late knockdown, he could have lost a decision. I don't think he looked good against Hopkins either, he was completely gun shy, that fight was awful. Roy was probably a B- fighter at the time fighting an A fighter in Calzaghe.. and I consider B- shot to bits considering what Roy was in his prime.
hmmm despite prior to the fight how so many Jones fanboys were saying Jones would win? who after made every excuse going especially Jones being shot...... Hindsight is such a great gift for the ignorant
Yet this ignorance continues .So Jones wasn't shot to **** when he fought Joe atschWell than that settles it ..Guess Hopkins also beat a prime Jones in their rematch same with Lebdev, and Green ..Since they all beat the same prime Jones ! I swear some people should not even comment on boxing !! I also hear that Mike Tyson beat a prime Holmes ! Bunch of ******s on this board !
They're not ******ed, they're trolls. Everybody knows Roy Jones was shot after the John Ruiz fight. No need to keep pointing that out (not that you were doing that), everybody on this board knows it already
You're going to extremes. Roy was somewhere below "his prime" but above "shot to bits" when he fought Calzaghe. I do think Jones passed his prime after Ruiz due to the weight gain / loss. the weight gain / loss affects Roy's performance. not only in 2003-2004, but again in 2010-2011, when he gained nearly 25 pounds after fighting Hopkins to fight Lebedev, then lost 15 pounds to fight Glazewski in 2012. Even if you think Roy - Hopkins 2 was a bad fight, clearly Roy had better movement, athleticism and elusiveness in that fight then he did in any fight since then. He looked stiff against Lebedev and really drained against Glazewski. He didn't look stiff against Hopkins. He just didn't land as many punches as Hopkins did, but the punches that did land on Hopkins were the same type of punches he would have landed in his prime. That said, I don't think anyone here believes that Jones is still in his prime. Holmes was past his prime when he came back to fight Tyson. it was basically a comeback fight for Holmes after taking nearly 2 years off after the 2nd spinks fight. he fought a prime Tyson and got knocked out after being competative for a few rounds. then when he came back again in the early 90s, he was further past his prime then he was in '88. but still was competative and won many fights.
Even Calzaghe doesn't give Calzaghe credit for that win. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/boxing/9164514.stm
Stop trying to get a name for yourself off of my ESB greatness fanny. Tell me Bottom Feeder, was Roy ahead on one card going into the 10th with a CW fighter who had just taken a CW world champ to a SD that many thought he won. Yes or No? You know its true. Whats pathetic about that?
Jones was shot to hell by the time they fought. Joe Cal wasn't in his prime either, but not diminished nearly as much. Joe's third best win, probably, and a pretty much meaningless one by the time they fought.
at these idiots who claim Calzaghe was shot as well. atsch Past prime? Sure, but shot? **** off with that garbage...
