RJJ must have been the most skilled boxer of all time to beat Lewis. I mean prime Lewis, althought you are probably talking about the Lewis that fought Vitali... Even while fighting late version of Lewis he would be punished brutally.
Jones would've gotten whooped plain and simple. His glass jaw wouldn't hold up against a heavyweight like Lewis or the Klitschkos.
He took the easiest path to a belt with Ruiz, a style that was suited for him. Even before the Tarver loss, I wouldnt have given him much chance against Lewis and Wladimir and I do remember thinking about it at the time because those two were mentioned prior to his return to 175. The only thing he has over Lewis is speed, but Lewis has a huge reach advantage and is not only big but accurate with good timing and huge power. Roy's speed will only take him so far, he has the reach issue to over come and Lewis is far more skilled than Ruiz and far more accurate. Pretty much ditto for Wladimir. Both of them would have caught Roy eventually and caught him good the way he always keeps his hands low.
I think Jones would win a couple rounds but Lewis would knock him out around the 8th. Considering this was the 03 Lewis. If it was prime Lewis it wouldn't last more than 3 rounds. Jones himself said that he would never get in the ring with someone like Lewis because he was so much bigger and powerful. He said he really wanted to fight Holyfield in 1999 and said Holyfield is big but he's not too big for me and said it would be a very good fight. Then Ruiz beat Holyfield and all that **** and they ended up fighting in 03 of course.
Anyone remember Jones talk talks during Klitschko vs. Brewster fight. Jones said "He Wladimir has a weak jaw, he better stay away from me!" Andrey
Lewis fought a great fight against Vitali, there was nothing wrong with him. It was one of his best performances. Vitali put an amazing amaount of pressure on him until he was cut in round three. Even after the cut, the pace did not slow down a bit. The problem is that, there are so many irrational, delusional, biased people around, even within the so called experts community. Those people sometimes completely lose connection with the basic facts and the sheep follow. RJJ beating Lewis is just wishful thinking and has nothing to do with reality.
Plenty of people were delusional about RJJ back then. Especially after beating Ruiz. There were a couple of local sports talk DJ's on the radio here in Seattle saying that Lewis should not fight RJJ right after the Ruiz fight. They were your typical casual fans (if that) that know next to nothing about boxing. Kind of like all the boxing fans back then that thought RJJ stood a chance against Lewis. These were the same people that were saying RJJ was better than SRR in the P4P rankings. I haven't heard that one in a while.
I'm glad it didn't happen. The punishment RJJ would take from ANY version of Lewis would be too much.
I think that a prime RJJ (at any weight) vs. Lennox Lewis right now, would lose big. I mean literally a Lennox Lewis that hasn't fought for years and is over the hill at this point and out of shape would have beaten a prime RJJ badly.
Some of y'all are vastly underestimating the level of esteem Roy Jones' skills were held during that time.
