Some guy in the boxing forum posted that Joppy would beat Greb. He also picked Calzaghe to beat SRR at middleweight. Wanted to get the classic opinion on this.......:huh Keith
Fixed. Keith, I think this guy in the boxing forum should practice more self reliance, beating himself off and picking his own nose before setting his sights on others.
I figured. I mean I would pick Greb to win 9.5/10 times against Joppy. Just checking the consensus. Keith
Whilst we don't have footage of greb, the reports about his victory over walker and tunney are detailed enough for me. I'm happy saying joppy would struggle to catch greb clean whilst shipping a lot of leather himself. Greb wide ud.
It's difficult to say because most sports have moved on massively, I can't think of any other than boxing you'd say 'yes I'd favour a champion from the 20s over a top competitor of today'. I think Greb probably beats Joppy though
I dunno pp, take a guy like armstrong who still looks fabulous on film. Then look at say demarco at lw today, are you saying you'd genuinely think twice about picking hank over de marco?
Well that's 1 of the things boxing is very much a skill, technique and strategy sport like football, so it's not sheer physical attributes. So football players and boxers of the 40s on can be world class today. Skills and techniques did generally come forward after the 20s in my view, so that's 1 thing that could go against Greb. I don't think Demarco beats Armstrong, no. But I do think Joppy is better than Demarco, technically good and quick hands. We don't know stylistically how that would match up against Greb, although he had problems with quicker fighters Anything can happen in boxing, but sports do generally progress. No I'm not picking Joppy to win here or anything, more thinking aloud
I think from walker law onwards the sport hasn't overly progressed it's still one man trying to knock out another. Pre walker law it was quite different which makes it difficult matching guys when they fought under different rule sets for some of the fights. Even then you have guys who still shine through based on reports and footage. But much less from then days can they be compared to modern boxers.
