I was wondering if some of the more knowladgable posters of the lighter weight classes could give some sort of assessent of Arce's career before his clash with world champ Wilfredo Vasquez Jr, who may well retire him. We all know im as a brawler but how has his career panned out. Over-achieved or under-achieved? What has his general level of opposition being like? Has he beaten any fighters considered great at lower weights or do his best wins come over paper champs and mabye top 10 guys rather than say top 3? Thanks
He has had a long solid career worthy of the Hall of Fame. I'd say he has over-achieved and he's done it as an all action fighter. I would not count him out against Vazquez jr, that is for sure.
Looked over The Ring annual rankings and found a couple tid-bits that may help to answer the question... JUNIOR FLYWEIGHT -Juan Domingo Cordoba, ranked #5 in 1998 / Arce UD 12, lopsided scores end of 1998 -Yo-Sam Choi, ranked #2 from 2000 and 2001 / Arce TKO 6 in mid-2002 -Melchor Cob Castro, from 1992-2003, only dropped out of top 10 rankings in 2002, ranked #6 in 2003/ Arce TD 6 mid 2003, KO 5 mid 2004 FLYWEIGHT -Hussein Hussein, ranked #9 in 2004 / Arce TKO 10, TKO 2 both in 2005 -Rosendo Alvarez, ranked #7 in 2005 / Arce KO 6 in 2006 JUNIOR BANTAMWEIGHT -Masibulele Makepula, ranked #8 in 2005 / Arce TKO 4 in 2006 Other wins by Arce I find to be notable, though the opposition was unranked: Tomas Rojas / Arce TKO 6 in 2007 Medgoen Singsurat / Arce TKO 1 in 2007 Martin Castillo, long faded, but his divisional rankings from 2003-2007 were #6, #2, #1, #2, #1/ Arce KO 1 in 2010 It's pretty fun to break down a career in this manner. Although by no means is it a science, but using The Ring rankings are a good consistent way to do it. I'll always remember Arce as being exciting and just stylish in general.
After researching further into him, I conclude that he is definitely not deserving of the Hall of Fame. I love him, and it is no insult to those in the Hall of Fame to mention him, but he falls far short in my opinion.
his fight with the great michael carbjal was great fight all be it in defeat jorge arce is almost never in a bad fight an brings it all the time another in a long line of all action fighters from mexico
I would. WV2 is the real deal, and if the light-punching Nongqayi can clean Arce's clock at this stage...
