He's making a comeback this weekend, just a week ahead of his fortieth birthday, after nearly 5 years on the shelf after being dominated and knocked out by countryman (and fellow longtime hard-scrapping veteran debuting in the 1990's) Jhonny González Vera. Division, opponent, and # of rounds all TBA - but we do have broadcast details. It will be aired on Mexico Televisa. Have to admit, I'm morbidly curious enough to check it out...but not expecting him to look even remotely good, and don't think a natural light flyweight attempting to return at this age, while this rusty, with 438 rounds on the odometer, is a remotely good idea. Hell, there were calls for Arce to retire after Nongqayi I a decade ago, then more loudly after he appeared to be luckily bailed out against then-unknown Jesús M. Rojas in a No Contest a few years later. Mexican fans will support him to hell & back, though, as he always did have that combination of brash in-ring fervor as well as entertainer's panache and loco pendejo charisma (perhaps more than anyone from his country since Jorge Páez Sr.)
Love Jorge Arce! This is one of my favorite boxing pictures ever: http://www.boxing360.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Jorge-Arce.jpg
Ay, that's a good one. This news bums me out, though, mostly because it just reminds me of the gaping hole in my life that used to be HBO Boxing (where El Travieso was a heavily-pushed mainstay for years). :
