Amsterdam you've been wrong about a few fighters. Most recently Cintron who you thought would knock out Margarito in the rematch, Calzaghe who you thought would easily dominate and knock out Hopkins, Pacquiao who you consistantly misjudge, etc. This whole "I've never been wrong" schtick is really off. You don't have to hate on Linares because Gamboa is in a similar division, and you don't have to hate on Donaire cause Mijares is in a similar division, you can be a fan of both. I suggest you watch Linares vs Gameliel Diaz and Donaire vs Maldonaldo and Darchinyan if you haven't already. They are really fun fights to watch and showcase good talent. anyways i think arguing with you about any fighter is basicaly useless, because you always find flimsy reasons to disparage their accomplishments when it suits your agenda. I have a feeling that Linares could unify his division and you would still have the same opinion of him. You are never wrong about a fighter in your own eyes because whenever a fighter proves you wrong, you find a million excuses as to why he didn't, and whenever a fighter proves you right, you find a million reasons why he did.
Those are off picks, not off about rating their ability or skill. That's not why I seek to bring them down a notch, they are overrated, I hate this nonsense. Linares is just solid, he's nothing special at all and he's hyped up like he can compete with true top fighters now. Seen them all, Linares didn't impress me vs. Diaz, I have stated this in the thread, it amazes me how off you all are in this scenerio, it's either Gamboa hate or love of this blue collar, classical style that Linares has, but either way, picking Linares over anybody top notch at 130 or over is ludicris. I rate their accomplishments as I see them, I use no agenda in rating accomplishments and try to be fair about them, some accomplishments are way overblown due to whatever reason, this irritates me and I seek to bring it down to a reasonable level of appreciation and not hype when it's undeserved. It's a weak division, I have stated that he is the best of the division, I expect him to do so. John got a gift over JMM, if John came here and Linares won, people would flip out, ignoring tha John got a gift over JMM and is just a good fighter, not anything special himself, Gamboa's about to blow out an opponent he struggled with twice. Guerrero is very average, I'd tip Linares over him confidently. Luevano, average. See what I mean? Now, would you tip Linares over Soto at 130? You'd have to be mad. I remember a case where I laid an assessment down on a fighters standing and ability and was somewhat off, that was Juan Diaz back around Freitas. I picked Freitas because I believed Diaz was overrated, which while he is a very good fighter and top at LW, he was, people thought he was going to dominate for years. Diaz beats Freitas and beats J. Diaz and the train for him gets steaming fast, while I am made to eat my words on him by Diaz fans. I was wrong there, but not wrong about his overall ability, as he proved 1 dimensional and leaky defensively agaisnt Nate Campbell, Freitas and J. Diaz couldn't expose this(I had Juan by TKO over Julio), but Campbell did and here's a guy that a bunch of people were picking to defeat Hatton at 140, overrated and it's ridiculous. Other than that I underrated Cotto's chin, which now I may overrate, because some people think Margo can stop him. What they fail to realise is that Mosely and Judah hit much harder than Margo and have greater accuracy and delivery, they fall into the hype, just like everyone has with Linares, when there is limited substance.
gamboa has had over 400 amateur fights, he's in his physical prime right now and since his physical gifts are part of what make him who he is, he'll slow down eventually. linares is only 22, he is not being rushed like gamboa.
Boxers with that much amateur background (400+) fights have their skillset permannently imprinted. The Gamboa that you see today would be sameone in 2-3 years time skillwise. You can not improve them much because their amateur style of fighting would always come out especially when the going gets tough.Example, they tend to score first rather than aim for a KO that is why Gamboa seems to slap his punches at times. Also because in amateur fights, KOs don't ususally happen, fighters who can move do not emphasize defense much but in professional, even a journeyman can KOyou which almost what happened in Gamboa. Linares on the other hand improves in his fights. If you watch his earlier fights compared to his last fight, there is a marked improvement. That is scary because this kid is only 22 years old. He is also tested at 22 while Gamboa at 26 has still to face a live, breathing opponent. Only his supporters would say that his last opponent would KO linares, etc, etc and other craps. Because if Linares fought that bum, the result would be a KO instead of decision.
400 fights of experience = 400 different styles 400 different defenses 400 different offenses and if he won most of those 400 than hes discovered nearly 400 ways to defeat his opponents. Do you honestly think that Gamboa can't adapt to a style like Linares? His experience point to the fact that Linares won't bring anything to the table that he hasn't dealt with in the past. IMO I'd easily lean towards the more experienced fighter in Gamboa who is 26 years old and has 400 fights than a 22 year old prospect. This is a VS thread fight now, I lean towards Gamboa to pick him apart without any hesitation. Linares is game, But Gamboa is phenomenal IMO. The most important quality a boxer has in this sport is EXPERIENCE. Bernard Hopkins aged like fine wine because of the ring smarts that he developed in his career as a professional boxer. If any one is going to have more ring smarts between Gamboa and Linares its EASILY Gamboa!!!!!
That was an answer to "potential" as you obviously did not read. At 26,Gamboa has already maxed out or nearly maxxed out especially with that extensive amateur experience. 400+ fight experience against amteur does not bring you much in professional boxing because most of them are actually not even journeyman in terms of capability. Some would only have a 8-10 fight experience using a headgear and a heavier gloves. If you are fed with that kind of opposition for more than 300+ of your 400+ fights, that imprints in you skills but skills not good in professional boxing as I have exprssed earlier. If you look at Gamboa, he is very mobile fghter but he does not move his head that much which is needed since most professional boxers (probably >90%)headhunt rather than body punch. But because he is so used to fighting with headgear (which eliminates virtually a KO unless the opponent has exceptionnaly strong KO power), the need for a very good head movement is not that important. But against professional fighters, at some point his head will get tagged. Linares is just 22 yet fought already at championship level. And his experience albeit less than 400 fights are all against professionals, 3 minute per round, 10-12 rounds per fight.
I knew that was an answer to potential. But I was speaking purely on picking a winner, I would have to go with Gamboa based on experience. And who are you kidding with this amateur bull crap, You don't think amateur experience matters much do you? Have you boxed in the amateurs and do you know how the system works? Have you ever gotten hit in the head with headgear on? Do you know that the baby thin headgear that most boxers use does virtually NOTHING in preventing a knockout?? Headgear is there to prevent cuts, and it HARDLY helps a boxers in terms of saving them from getting knocked out. A well placed punch is going to **** a boxer up regardless if there is head gear or not. You seem to not show any type of respect to the fact that Gamboa has FOUGHT in 425+ fights. The professional system is different sure, but in the end a fight is a fkn fight no matter which way you want to score it, and as far as fight experience is concerned Gamboa has to be light years ahead and thats why I lean towards him. It has nothing to do with Linares, I'm a huge fan of the guy.
