Real oddball match here, but bare with me.

Corbett was lauded for his skill, for being one of the pioneers of the beginning of a more modern approach to the game.

Gonzalez was an amateur with skills himself, within the confines of the amateur game beating both Bowe and Lennox Lewis.

Gonzalez was also 6'7 with an 82' inch reach. He was a 235-250 pound fighter when he was in any kind of shape.

How does a huge fighter with a decent amount of skill fare against a far smaller, greater fighter with more skill?

Truly an original thread. Gonzales waay too big, but not as good as Corbett..he would win a sloppy, mauling, ugly sort of contest.

I was intrigued by that recent Fitzsimmons threads to be honest.

The clash of modern size/strength against older heavies that have almost mythical qualities but are "undersized" interests me.

The eras are so different it is almost impossible to compare them. Corbett was great in his time, Gonzalez no where near great in his.

Gonzales sheer physicality would take him to a win. Not unlike Carnera-Loughran.

Conn would be beset with the same problems due to the great size disparity, and so would Tunney, to an extent, but he would fare better, IMO.

Conn would have been listed as a 6'3" in Gonzalez' era and Tunney as a 6'1.5" , and how better would have Tunney fared ? u c him outjabbing Gonzalez ? taking his punches and landing his share or avoiding his punches and landing his share ? but surprisingly realistic so far .

Speed, condition, footwork, defensive skill versus size, strength, height and reach, BUT, Gonzalez had no footwork, was very hittable, and not all that fast by comparison, and I think his condition was so so. IF he nails Jim with the big one he can take him out, because he did have power, but not sure that would happen, and even if he did hurt Jim, Corbett was great at either clinching, running, ducking, or leaning back and getting out of trouble. In a 12 round bout I go with Corbett by dull decision.

Tunney was bigger (though not by nuch) and stronger than either Corbett or Conn..he had a certifiably great chin as well. i think he would beat Gonzales. Again, the size disparity wouldn't have been as great as with conn and Corbett.

Gonzo can't box for ****, but at 6' 7" tall and solid as a rock at 238 pounds, he'd be way too big and strong for Jim Corby... Corby does well in the early rds running around, but he eventually begins to tire a bit and becomes more and more flat-footed... I see Joe Gonzo walking Jim Corby down as the fight wears on...

Gonzalez utilizes his impressive modernity to thoroughly squash the primitive Corbett.

I thought I could have beaten Gonzalez...Honest to God, he SUCKED. Corbett, a serious professional fighter, that was a student of the game, and trained and stuff like that, would slap that big dummy into submission.

Getting KOd by Dempsey = great chin , i know , it's only d men who went d distance with Dempsey or d 1 who KOd him who had a less than great chin .
Now i know everything is as usual with u , i started thinking after your 1st 2 posts here .

Tunney was shorter than Conn though , and it was Conn's height that made him what he was . A 5'8" Conn would not have achieved what he did , asuming he was naturally massive enough 2 weigh at least , but no more than 1 lb than he had .

I assume d bigger Tunney beats Czar Nikolay Valuev worse than shot Holyfield did , right ?
