I've heard of this guy being in a multitude of close and or controversial fights. What was the exact key component there? A certain promoter, was his high work rate, high energy style conductive to scoring points? The amount of SD and MD fights on his record just blows my mind, none the less the fights that were UD's with odd scores (The Pernell fight... The ****?) Anyway, what close fights did he deserve to decidedly lose?
I thought he clearly lost the first Dorsey fight, that was a horrible decision. Not sure how I remember the second. The Espinoza fight was ruled a draw if I remember right, but I thought he squeaked that one out, despite Espinoza coming on strong late. I think he was entertaining and just had that knack of making every eye in the house stay on him, rather than his opponent. That probably swayed the judges. He'd lay against the ropes for extended periods and then lash out with furious rallies to close out rounds much in the same manner Galindez did. Lots of similarities there, now that I think about it.
Interesting comparison and one I wouldn't have thought of myself. But I can see it. He didn't hit hard but waded in and traded, and he got hit an awful lot. So while on the one hand he would produce a lot of offense, he wasn't usually doing a lot of damage and his opponent was also landing a lot, and he was always in good shape as far as I can recall ... so it made for very competitive fights.
Bump. Love to see some more discussion. Recently watched the first Dorsey/Paez fight and that has to be one of the worst robberies I've ever seen. A weight drained, cement shoed Paez sitting against the ropes being outworked by Dorsey for 12 rounds. Something like a 9-3 fight, if that. Paez's flurries were almost entirely harmless. I couldn't wrap my mind around that one.
