Hard to believe he's only 33, but a truly ancient 33 in cage years. Three losses in a row now, and 6 in his last nine including four by TKO. Yeah he still has moments where he looks good and even shows flashes of his WEC brilliance from his early twenties, but... he's taking WAY too much damage. His legacy (probable HOF) is already secure. After sixteen paydays in the octagon he's probably okay financially. Can't be worth continuing anymore.

In that last couple of minutes versus Yan alone, he took an insane amount of cephalic trauma. I'm really hopeful we get a farewell announcement here..

FFS, after the McGregor loss I was hoping to never see him again. I guess he did snag a couple of Performance of the Night bonuses and become champ once more after that, but...

I just have really fond memories of his run in 2008-9 and don't like seeing him on the wrong side of violent one-sided thrashings. All that blood spurting everywhere as he lay there almost helplessly, doing just enough to forestall the stoppage... hard stuff to watch. :shakehead:

He's still capable of having some barn burners against mid-card level fighters. Not sure he would want to stick around for that though.

The UFC commentary team have said like 10 times today about Holloway being the best champ of that weight.

    What about Aldo, lol?

He can't help chasing after the best, that is who Aldo has always been - and for top guys (like Petr Yan for instance, who is now making a habit of making his bones against the shells of WEC legends: Faber and now Aldo back to back) he represents a relatively safe win over a name that still carries a lot of weight.

WTF was the ref waiting for. That was too much punishment on a fighter who had been shrinking for the entire round.

Aldo just can't pull the tiger anymore. There where time where Yan was wide open for a punch and Aldo just couldn't take advantage of it.

Aldo can probably pull out 3 rnd fights but his days of the 5 rnd fights are over.

    Yan is a beast.

I'd like to see Aldo face Cruz, then call it a day.

Agreed completely. Was actually going to make a similar thread. Aldo's been caught between a rock and a hard place since losing the title to Holloway. He's still elite wherever he campaigns but not good enough to win gold. And he's take a ton of damage in his losses. He did good last night and he could have retired with some dignity if that absolute idiot of a reg didn't let him absorb all of that punishment. Yan/Aldo was a higher display of striking technique than most higher weight boxing.

Yeah, for the most part I try and tune out that obnoxious putrid shitheel Bruce aka "The Buffman" (felt some bile come up when he was called that by a commentator) although my ears perked up during intros when he said "...a boxer..." - not often in the modern hybridized era that you hear that listed as someone's forté and primary style.

I tbh wasn't completely blown away by him, but there isn't much shame in being competitive with a faded & front-running but still capable and determined Aldo. Could've been 29-28 either way after three, but from that point on it was just a bombardment. "No Mercy" lived up to his moniker and took care of business.

Definitely agree. That two round gas tank follows him whatever weight class he goes too. It gets hard to watch, because when he starts emptying out, his defense goes out the window, his reaction times slow, and he eats knuckle sandwhiches all you can eat. He's not a huge puncher either. A shame because while he's fresh, he's still literally a top level guy for those two rounds that he has gas.
