More or less, yeah. The hype machine had been whirring & clicking for a couple of years already, pretty much starting with his UFC debut and throughout McGregor's run in the company, but it was the don't-blink-or-you'll-miss-it blitz of José Aldo that catapulted him all the way into super-stardom. Aldo had been a consensus top 4 pound for pound MMA guy for years, when McGregor came along to snap his decade-long unbeaten streak of 18-0 with nine kayos, including a 10-0 (4) run in consecutive world championship bouts in the WEC & UFC.
Aldo is an amazing MMA fighter, one of the best I've ever seen. But he's past his prime and has been passed by. He will never compete with the elite boxers. But god bless if he wants to try. People need to learn that boxing is NOT a sport you walk into. MMAis and has been, because excelling at certain aspects can afford you some wins at the top (see Brock lesnar). Boxing is a different world. If you aren't elite, it will be exposed quickly.
...but despite his (deserved) accolades for his work in that decade prior to being KTFO by McGregor and finally dethroned, I'm not sure a jump to boxing makes sense. He went on to catch a beating from Holloway (suggesting it wasn't just a fluke lucky punch that did him in) and 30 is old in this mooted new sport, which requires a lot more stamina, not to mention relearning defense against men far more specialized as punchers as opposed to cross-trained martial artists with some measure of training in striking (however good by MMA standards) and taking more pinpoint hits - from welterweights, presumably? A pretty deep field, in boxing... - on a chin that has already received some fissures in the cage.
30 years old seems too late for a switch. Robert Garcia seems to think he has something. He has a net worth like 10 mil from MMA so not sure why he would be doing this unless he is just doing it for sport. He seems to have decent form from the video I watched. Has a better boxing form than McGregor I think.
Also, there is the curse of Brazilians (since Jofre) being just flat out terrible in boxing and getting KTFO left and right. Unless they're named Acelino Freitas.
Thanks. I do not watch UFC at all. The only current MMAers I can name on top of my head is of course, McGregor and Ronda Rousey.
The allure of a payday like McGregor's is the impetus for this motivation. Too bad for them it is impossible.
He can't hang with McGregor, Holloway and struggled with Mendes... He gets humiliated by pretty much anyone.
Most recently with Patrick Teixeira against Curtis Stevens... Will the Falcao brothers be able to reverse the curse? HMMMM.....
