This guy is an overlooked Middleweight contender in the 1940's. Interesting how highly he was though of, even though he was still a prospect, albeit a bright one. http://news.google.co.uk/newspapers...AAAAIBAJ&pg=3683,1552077&dq=jose+basora&hl=en Anyone got any thoughts on Basora?
I don't believe I've ever seen any footage of him. Anyone else here? In his rematch with LaMotta he was said to have beaten him to the punch often with those straight punches, as mentioned in the article, wearing Jake himself down with body punches. It's interesting to imagine his style. A sharp-shooting, two fisted power, pressure puncher. Sounds formidable.
He's a bit of a mystery man with no film seemingly existing of his fights. What's unquestionable though is that he was a top class middleweight in his day. Charles and LaMotta handed him his only decisive defeats during his prime, and Robinson effectively ended his career by belting him out in one round. On top of being a hard hitter with skills, he was also a fairly tall middleweight in his time at over 6 feet.
Stylistically he seems an oddity. Hard punching pressure fighter with good boxing skills and used his height well apparently. Maybe a better Kelly Pavlik type fighter? Despite him looking vulnerable on paper, he took shedloads of punishment from Charles before almost taking him out before walking onto a left hook.
