Jose Legra vs Howard Winstone II Full fight.....skillful fight [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQSTxvvBfQs[/ame] Any thoughts on this ?
Don't want to take anything away from Legra but I think Howards best fights were behind him at this point in his career. He had been on the floor in a previous fight against jimmy Anderson and was getting hit more easily. On the other hand Legra came out sharp caught Winstone early, knocking him down and closing his eye at the same time and Winstone's vision was hampered from then on.
It's a shame there isn't any footage of the first fight to the best of my knowledge. Winstone was moved too slowly, he should have been in a world title fight a couple of years before he was.He wasn't quite the same after the first two epic Saldivar fights, though no doubt had it been a weaker era he would have done more afterward, as would Legra, Ramos etc
Yes, I agree, Winstone was past-prime, and it´s a shame there isn´t any footage of the first, I agree too ! Anyway, great performance to me, it´s one of my favorites..... Legra was very fast, and he could be very elusive...... If somebody speaks spanish here, this is a very good article about him: http://blaxboxing.blogspot.com/2008/03/jos-legr-el-puma-de-baracoa.html His boxing idols are Kid Chocolate, Kid Gavilán, Archie Moore, Sugar Ray Robinson and Kid Tunero.....
Good stuff Vic. I have footage of this fight on DVD, I think I'll give it a watch. And that interview was very good, that you posted.
:good is there more to that article? Over here if you talk boxing with the older fellas. Legra is normally the first if not only name that is mentioned.
Supposedly the Johnson fight was an eliminator for the title and obviously he lost that one. With the competition for title shots being so fierce thats obviously going to push him back in the queue..which it did for another 18 months. But I'm starting to wonder if it was officially an eliminator because despite Johnson moving up no2 in the ratings, he never got that shot.
