What's your thinking on this featherweight slickster? I like the way he connects Winstone with Famechon, sort of an era-straddling fighter. He was really busy, too, fought something like 150 fights, losing just 12. He's got that tidy Cuban style, but he married it to some nice flair. Has anyone seen his fight with Jofre? General considered no better than a middling puncher, here he is dismantling an aged Winstone. NIGHTMARISH injury in round 1. And check out the method for treating the swelling at the end of four! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6GjwPxtLVs Pretty cool.
I always thought Fammo's victory over Legra was a classic win. Jose has immense ring activity prior to the match with Famechon, although numerous people suggest a great deal of 'padding' in Legra's early career. Legra remains a very seldom spoken of figure. I'd also like to hear from anyone with some words on him.
Having a leech to put on his eyelid between rounds would have been handy! Winstone was in steady decline by the time of this fight and as soon as his lead eye closed in the first round he was ****ed. Mind you, even if he had both eyes he probably still would have lost to this Legra. I think Winstone would have been better served in this fight to follow the example of Johnny Famechon and try and take Legra on the inside, because Legra did not really have an educated in-fighting game. Fighting on the inside also would have allowed Winstone to 'grasp' where Legra was much easier than trying to find him with shots on the outside. You have a much better feel for your man and where to throw punches when you are in a clinch. Winstone never had Johnny's inside game tho. Legra very much fought like a young Muhammad Ali, floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee (hence his nickname the pocket Cassius Clay). Wasn't the most accurate fighter with his shots, but his long reach and height made him an issue to outbox no matter how good a boxer you were. Johnny Famechon, a marvellous boxer, couldn't really beat him on the outside and had to scrap out a win by fighting in the trenches. Famechon kept on slipping in their fight and I think a literal ref would have scored some knockdowns against him and who knows, Legra might have come away with the championship. I personally thought that fight could have gone either way, even though I had Famechon taking it by a point. Much like Ali, I think a fighter with good defense that could get on the inside and work him over could beat him, (which is why Saldvivar was able to beat him as well).
Probably in no worse place, simply receiving the same spiel from a different poster, but cheers anyway :good
Class how he doesn't telegraph his right hand for the knockdown at the start. Even disguises it coming in.
you watched the other winstone fights on there MCGain. There's some great early stuff aginst Guerrero and Baby Luis.
