This was my score, but it is just one man's opinion. I felt it was very close and that Ramirez never fought better. My scoreline is so close that one can't moan too much either way, but I did have Ramirez ahead on points. Round 1: 10-10 Even Round 2: 10-9 Arguello Round 3: 10-9 Ramirez Round 4: 10-9 Arguello Round 5: 10-9 Ramirez Round 6: 10-8 Ramirez (Ramirez scores a knockdown) Round 7: 10-9 Arguello Round 8: 10-10 Even Round 9: 10-9 Arguello Round 10: 10-9 Ramirez Total: 96-95 Ramirez (actual scores: 95-94 and 97-94 both for Arguello and 98-95 for Ramirez)
JLR is so underrated. This was a really strong performance against a top-tier AA and the first time he got on peoples’ radar ... and even then for a while he was looked upon as ‘guy with really good record who would look good on someone’s resume.’ I think I had Jose by two points but I’d have to go back and rescore.
I think Ramirez nicked it by a point. The knockdown being the difference. Very close fight. I’m sure Arguello would have gotten him over the 15 round distance.
Arguello was what I always call an attrition fighter. He, and guys like Eusebio Pedroza, Vicente Saldivar and Lupe Pintor, really thrived over 15 rounds where they were able to turn it on down the stretch or capitalize on their slower, methodical punishment they were doling out in the earlier rounds. So, yeah, I agree that Arguello would have taken this in a 15 rounder. But I think it would go the distance. Ramirez had an incredible jaw.
