I'm a big Curry fan, but let's be real, his chin wasn't the best, and Napoles was top notch. The cut thing doesn't play a major factor of they fight, I feel also.
At their best is the criteria? Because if you pop Curry for getting flash knockdown'd against Hwang, you better pop Napoles for getting a razor thin decision against Clyde Gray that many thought he lost. Curry at the time of the McCrory fight would be a handful for any Welter that ever lived. I'm not so sure I wouldn't take him over Napoles. And that in no way denigrates Napoles.
Jose Mantequilla Napoles was truly a great welterweight champion, He fought the best around at that time,Curtis Cokes, Ralph Charles, Emile Griffith, Clyde Gray, Hedgemon Lewis, Ernie Lopez, and Armando Muniz. Donald Curry, too fought the best of his era,Colin Jones, Nino La Rocca, Milton Mc Crory, and Marlon Starling. Both champions lost their respective titles to the likes of John H. Stracey and Lloyd Honeyghan, two of Britain's best fighters. Both Curry and Napoles had their strengths and weaknesses. Curry had been down before and had his share of cuts. Napoles did suffer cuts as in the 1st Billy Backus title losing loss in 1970. Napoles did fare well in his middlweight title effort against champion Carlos Monzon in 1974, for the first 4 rounds, but took a beating over the next 2 rounds. Napoles retired on his stool in round 7. Curry also fared well against Mike Mc Callum in his bid for the WBA junior middleweight, before being knocked out by the Body Snatcher in 1987. Despite similarities, a very close fight for the first 10 rounds, then Mantequilla starts to land his very hard left hook to the bodyand continues the attack. a cut and swollen Napoles comes back to score a close but unanimous decision in 15 rounds. Donald will have a swollen rib cage.
