just for the cuts aspect (and im sure it's been brought up) in how many of napoles fights were cuts ACTUALLY a factor in the outcome?
All of his stoppage losses (4) came via cuts. Well, the Monzon fight wasn't stopped specifically due to the cuts (he was just taking a walloping), but he was cut up pretty badly.
yeah, the monzon fight does stand out a bit. but it's a good point. i was only really thinking of the backus fight for his vulnerability to cutting but it looks like there's something of a pattern
At ww I think napoles is a truly elite h2h matchup losing to only an infintessimal(sp) minority. At lw I don't view him as some h2h beast. I'm watch more of his lw fights later to make a concrete determination however.
I'm addressing their respective chances against Jose H2H as I see them. Alexis may well have opted to specifically attempt a stoppage on cuts, just as Rossman did for his upset of Galindez. Put another way, what are the chances Napoles gets out of this one with his face unmarked? Don't forget that Armando Muniz should have taken Jose's WW Title on cuts in Acapulco, except for some slimy ringside maneuvering by another Jose whose last name is Spanish for regurgitated lesbian feces. (In fact, the Spanish language version of "Cupchicks" is titled, "Jose Sulamain.") Mando might be a good one to ask about SRL-Napoles, although he only went six rounds with Ray before tendonitis in his left arm ended their match and his career. Favoring Ray by a couple of points on neutral turf is a reasonable conclusion. (Put 'em in Acapulco with Puta Sulamain at ringside though, and I'd bet my retirement on Napoles somehow getting out with a non-defeat.) Randy Shields was something of a bleeder, getting stopped multiple times on cuts, but Ray wasn't among those who victimized him this way. No, Ray shouldn't need cuts to take a decision, and I don't think he'd plan on it. Napoles was superb at slipping shots on his way in though, and there seems to be some credence to the claim of Shields that SRL telegraphed shots, based on footage of him missing badly in Montreal, as well as the Benitez match. (And Randy boxed him twice in the amateurs, splitting those bouts before their professional rubber match in Baltimore.)
My evaluation is somewhat unfair however: i'm under going a mass reevaluation of everyone I consider great. I've recently been studying every great from the 80's onwards (only sanchez and zaragoza remain) so my views on alexis are more educated that my views on jose. Next i'll be looking from 50-80 and so i'll be able to better justify my views on the great napoles.
That makes very little sense. And how can you watch more of Napoles Lightweight fights, we only have a 1 rounder. Its all about interpolation. You really do love your boxing, tahts some project.
No what I mean is that i've seen how awesome he is at ww so i'm sold on his effectiveness there. I know very little of him as a lw and apparently i've seen all the footage we have of him there. If people are sold on his effectiveness as a lw then they know something I don't hence me saying I need to look into it further. Yeah it's by far my favourite spectator sport. I prefer to play football than to box but as a spectator and fan boxing is my favourite. The history is so rich. It is a large project however involving over 300 fighters and studying their resume, style and legacy. I anticipate it will take over a year.
Its interpolation though. Boxing is great, only darts rivals it for sheer entertainment IMO and it still aint close. Theres nothing like the buzz you get from boxing though. Good luck with it, Im no organised enough to do somethign like that
Styles don't always translate well through different weights for example hatton at light welter compared to welter. Yeah cheers, i'm splitting the era's into 30 year sections and I plan to group fighters within their era and then i'll try to do an atg grouping hopefully.
