Why do people feel the need to overrate my favourite fighters to the point where I have to defend the other guy?

If you let Montequilla bird dog from a ringside seat Villomar Fernandez brilliant bang-bang-bang step back victory over Alexis he'd have it in the bag too.

Interesting point of view, and while i never thought about it, Arguello did have a lot of guys bleed.

What do people think of comparisons between Monzon and Arguello(size notwithstanding).

Aside from the terrific straight right shared by both, I don't think there's a great deal of stylistic similarity. Alexis has been stated to be the closest thing to Louis since the Bomber's heyday. Both were great ring generals at their best, but I think Monzon was more a master of control when it came to imposing his will and physicality on the overall complexion of a bout. Carlos was much better on the retreat in mid ring behind his jab, while I don't recall Arguello doing much in actual retreat. Once Alexis had his back against the ropes though, he could be lethal, as Elizondo discovered when he got his jaw fractured. Arguello was a deadly body puncher, not something I think of when considering Monzon. Alexis was much more noted for his ability to have every punch in the book be outstanding, and he could end a fight at anytime with a shot from either hand.

In his own way, Arguello was smoldering, while Carlos had a heart of ice. There are photographs of Alexis glaring at an opponent in mid match, and his eyes narrowed with dark intent when he got up after Ganigan decked him. I could see the Devil possessing Arguello, but if Satan tried doing that to Carlos, the subsequent message on Monzon's abdomen would quickly read, "Get me outta here!" If the Terminator was a boxer in the 1970s, his name was Monzon.

I'll go along with Flea and Powerpuncher on this. Napoles was a dominant welter when he was really a blown up lightweight or light welter. By the way I'm a big fan of Alexis but this fight is wrong for him.

Pryor found Arguello easily, and Napoles is so much faster, tighter in the exchanges and just better at finding/exploiting openings... it's just a basic class gulf for me.

There's no stylistic edge; provide me with one and you might be able to sway me :D

Saying 'he was a quality lightweight' doesn't cut it, how would Arguello overcome what Napoles brings to the table?

I will add that Arguello is one of my true favourites (up there with Saad, Roy Jones and Kid Gavilan) and even I can't figure out how he'd win. I've seen plenty of both; Alexis wouldn't win (IMO) :good

Duodenum already did it well enough, I'd say. Arguello is far from out-classed here, itry is just a ridiculous extremist. He reminds me of a Classic version of the old poster Amsterdam.

I genuinely think it's the opposite. How would Jose overcome the punch variety and skillful aggression of Alexis?

that's not me asking you, it's rhetorical.

But in my head, I'd think the default choice should be alexis and it's trying to consider how napoles can win.

I'm genuinely shocked noone else has voted for him.
